Henrico resident Robin Williams, lead right, was diagnosed with breast cancer in May of 2020 during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Mrs. Williams, who is legally blind, relied on her husband, Larry D. Williams for support, in that he was the only family member who could be with her inside the hospital due to the COVID19 restrictions at the time. Mrs. Williams’ breast cancer treatment plan included 16 rounds of radiation at the VCU Massey Cancer Center in Richmond. Since coming home to recover nearly three years ago, Mrs. Williams continually has been supported by her family and friends.

Santa seemingly is coming down the chimney in a storefront on Grace Street between 5th and 6th streets in the old Miller & Rhoads building in Downtown Richmond. Santa Claus, the legendary figure who is the traditional patron of Christmas in the United States and other coun- tries, brings gifts to children (and many grown-ups, too). His popular image is based on traditions associated with Saint Nicholas, a fourth-century Christian saint, according to Britannica. Miller & Rhoads was a Virginia-based department store chain with its Richmond location known for its “SantaLand” upstairs attraction. It closed in 1990, according to Wikipedia.

Honoring historic Girl Scout troops Scout leader Glennys Fleming, center, holds the resolution honoring Girl Scout Troops #34 and #35 that was presented Monday night by Richmond City Council to Ms. Fleming and several scouts from the troops sponsored by Ebenezer Baptist Church. Historic Troop #34, the first African-American troop in the South, was chartered in March 1932 after Emma Watson wanted her daughter to participate in scouting as she had before moving to Richmond from Chicago. With the support of influential Richmond women such as Maggie L. Walker and Lena Watson, dean of students at Virginia Union University, Ms. Watson advocated for the local Girl Scouts council to create a local African-American troop. It met at VUU. In 1936, Troop #35 was established at Ebenezer Baptist Church, which began sponsoring Troop #34 in 2015.

Bringing Henrietta Lacks to life Oprah Winfrey stars as Deborah Lacks, the daughter of the title character in the HBO film “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” that premieres 8 p.m. Saturday, April 22, on HBO. Mrs. Lacks, a Virginia native who moved her family from their Halifax County tobacco farm in 1941 to Maryland, was a cancer patient at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. She died in 1951 not knowing that her tumor cells, now known as HeLa cells, were harvested by hospital researchers and duplicated for use even today by scientists for medical testing around the world. The HBO movie is based on the best-selling book about Mrs. Lacks and her unknowing and uncompensated contribution to the world. Actress Rose Byrne, left, portrays the book’s author, Rebecca Skloot, in the film.

Courthouse renaming: The courthouse in Charles City County has a new name. On Feb. 17, it was renamed the Iona Whitehead Adkins Courthouse in honor of the county’s late circuit court clerk. In 1967, Mrs. Adkins was the first African-American elected to a court of record in the United States since Reconstruction. Mrs. Adkins served as the court clerk for 21 years until her retirement in 1988. She also was active with the local NAACP branch, the Charles City Civic League and St. John Baptist Church in Charles City until her death in October 2004. An array of elected officials attended the ceremony, including former Gov. Terry McAuliffe and Congressman Robert C. “Bobby” Scott. A plaque with Mrs. Adkins’ photo hangs in the courthouse foyer. Cityscape: Slices of life and scenes in Richmond-Artist Austin Miles of Petersburg puts the finishing touches last week on this new mural that now decorates Max Market, 1125 Hull St. She is contributing the fine details to the mural that began with a community paint day Oct. 5. The mural is the first of a planned series titled “Brown Girl Narratives” that Kristal Brown, founder and leader of Black Women Cache LLC, is spearheading. This and other murals will help fulfill the goal of the organization, Ms. Brown said, which is “to highlight the lived experiences of black women through media and visual arts.” Next year, the Virginia Commonwealth University doctoral student plans to release a coffee table book focusing on black women and hold other events. Harmony McKenzie, 4, makes her presence known as she attends the March to Fund Safe Schools last Saturday with her grandmother, Katina Harris, president of the Richmond Education Association. About 100 people walked from William Fox Elementary School on Hanover Avenue in The Fan to Monroe Park calling for funding to upgrade or replace Virginia’s aging schools. Before the march, Ms. Harris paused to support a bake sale benefiting the Fox School community in the wake of the Feb. 11 fire that destroyed the building. The school opened in 1911. Many of those attending the march called for a new George Wythe High School to replace the decaying school building in South Side that opened in 1960. Harmony attends the pre-school at Mary Scott School in North Side.

Coming home to history U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine tours the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia Sept. 21 to view the exhibit about a legal case he was involved with as a civil rights lawyer in Richmond. The exhibit, “Redlining in Richmond: HOME v. Nationwide,” details the historic suit Housing Opportunities Made Equal Inc., or HOME, lodged against the insurance company for discriminatory practices, including denying insurance to homeowners in African-American neighborhoods. Sen. Kaine represented HOME in the successful suit. Joining the tour is Heather Mullins Crislip, president and CEO of HOME. The exhibit is on display through Oct. 14 at the museum located in Jackson Ward.
