Members of the sorority’s Sigma Delta Zeta Chapter hosted a brunch for Ms. Underwood, who was in town to perform at the Funny Bone comedy club. Ms. Underwood, a host of the CBS show “The Talk,” served as the 23rd International Grand Basileus of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority in 2008. She pledged in 1990.

Who are the Capitol Police protecting? // The noise was deafening last Saturday when an immigrant rights group held a rally in Capitol Square at the same time Republican gubernatorial candidate Corey Stewart held an “End Sanctuary Cities” rally espousing an opposite viewpoint. At least two of the Stewart supporters, one at right, openly carried military-style weapons and guns and stood just yards away from the ICE Out of RVA protesters. Capitol Police formed a line between the two groups, as shown here. But their backs were to the men carrying the weapons. Please see more photos, A5.

The bodies of the mother and daughter were found Thursday, Feb. 16, inside their home at the Oliver Crossing Apartments near Mosby Court in the East End. Police said the women were the victims of a double murder-suicide in which Walter Gaines III, Shaquenda’s 23-year-old estranged boyfriend, shot and killed them before turning the gun on himself. In addition to her sisters, Ms. Walker is survived by her two young children, who may have witnessed the fatal shootings.

No. 13 and Mayor Levar Stoney, second from right, in ceremoniously pushing their new truck into the station Saturday, although the vehicle actually was being driven slowly in reverse. Location: 411 Commerce Road. The new truck was put into service during the “housing ceremony.” It is one of nine the city Fire Department has ordered since 2012 under a replacement program initiated under former Mayor Dwight C. Jones. This is the first new truck to arrive since April 2016. The city’s goal is to replace over time the trucks that the city’s 19 engine companies deploy to reduce the cost of keeping outdated equipment in service.

Creating a church home // Pastor Jeffrey A. Lee Sr., left, is on a mission to turn the once roofless building at 2700 Q St. in Church Hill into a home for the church he founded, Spirit of God Ministries International. A full-time Pepsi salesman, Pastor Lee, 52, and his 20-member congregation are making progress, as the before and after photos show. The left photo was taken in September 2012, when the small congregation purchased the building from Greater St. Beulah Holiness Church for about $50,000. Since then, the congregation has spent another $50,000 transforming the exterior. The photo at right was taken Tuesday. Pastor Lee said the church’s next step is to redo the interior so it can be used for worship and other activities. Until that work is done, and there is no firm timetable as yet, he and his congregation will continue to hold services at the Our House community center in Mosby Court.

Cityscape //Last April, it was just a hole in the ground. Now the $6.3 million Eggleston Plaza is taking shape at 2nd and Leigh streets in Jackson Ward. When completed in 2017, the project will include 31 apartments and a first-floor restaurant. The building occupies the former site of Eggleston Hotel, one of the few places that civil rights leaders, entertainers and other African-Americans could stay during the era of segregation when most city hotels barred non-white guests. The old hotel collapsed and the site was cleared in 2009. The plaza sits across from the renovated Hippodrome Theater and the Taylor Mansion entertainment, restaurant and residential complex. The development includes another 10 townhouse-style apartments at 1st and Jackson streets that already are being rented.

Jeff Bourne, chair of the Richmond School Board: I appreciate the opportunity to share with all of the Richmond Free Press readers my foremost wishes for 2017. My first and foremost wish is for continued health and well-being for my wife, Anedra, my daughter, Sydney, and my son, Joseph. I also pray that I become a better husband and father in 2017. As Nelson Mandela once said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” So it is my hope that, as we move through the year 2017, our city takes bold steps to enrich and improve the lives of our most precious resource — our children. Giving our young people the opportunity, tools and foundation to reach their wildest dreams is vitally important to the future of our city, our region, our Commonwealth and our country. Those are my foremost wishes for 2017 — and every year.
