Café and bakery debuts at theater // Customers browse at the new 1927 Café and Bakery inside the Altria Theater at Main and Laurel streets across from Monroe Park. The shop opened last week and offers breakfast, lunch and evening bistro fare, along with teas and coffee. The café is open seven days a week to the public and provides additional food and beverage options for show attendees. The name pays tribute to the year when a Masonic group opened the building as The Mosque.

Renowned hip-hop artist in city // Hip-hop artist KRS-One, aka “Knowledge Reigns Supreme Over Nearly Everybody,” stops by Virginia Union University’s bookstore Wednesday. He’s in Richmond for several speaking and performance engagements. Once dubbed “the conscience of hip-hop,” KRS-One gained fame in the mid-1980s with Boogie Down Productions. With 20 albums to his credit, he is considered one of hip-hop’s top emcees. He also is the author of three books on the musical genre and in 1989 established the “Stop the Violence” movement. In Richmond, he was a featured panelist Wednesday afternoon at “Unapologetically Black: Hip Hop’s Effect on Black Liberation” at Virginia Commonwealth University. He is performing 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28, at The National, 708 E. Broad St., in Downtown.

Cityscape // A new addition is coming to Richmond’s skyline. This rendering shows the new 21-story tower that is to open in 2017 at 10th and Byrd streets in Downtown. SunTrust Bank will occupy part of the building, which will bear the bank’s name. The $93 million structure also is to include 187 apartments on the upper floors. Dominion Realty Partners LLC, which has developed apartment complexes on the riverfront and in the former Hotel John Marshall at 5th and Franklin streets, announced the development last week. The big question is whether Dominion Realty Partners will include minority contractors in the project. The company faced sharp criticism from the Richmond NAACP several years ago for failing to include minority contractors when it overhauled the former hotel.

High spirit at Freedom Classic // When it comes to the long-standing rivalry between Virginia Union University and Virginia State University, the fans of both teams always have fun. City becomes dumping ground again // “No city policies changed, and the dumping and accumulated bulk trash is rapidly taking place,” she continued in pointing to these examples of what she considers a “disturbing reality.” The problem, Ms. Robertson stated, is that the city is doing too little to prevent people from driving along alleys and dumping “mattresses, old furniture and tires free of charge.” Unless residents get vehicle license plates or photos of violators, “for law-abiding citizens living in such communities — tough luck.” However, Ms. Robertson stated she is not giving up trying to find ways to hold accountable those who illegally dump refuse. City becomes dumping ground again // Just weeks after a community cleanup, these alleys in Highland Park have been re-trashed. Unwanted mattresses now fill part of the alley in the 3300 block of Utah Place. A pile of tires has been dumped in the 3200 block of Fifth Avenue. After hearing from angry constituents, Richmond City Councilwoman Ellen F. Robertson is blaming the city administration’s indifference. “When we began cleaning alleys, we forcefully warned that unless the city changed its mode of operations in managing bulk trash, dumping and accumulated trash, the cycle would start all over,” the 6th District councilwoman stated in a Dec. 30 email to residents.

Flooded streets like this one on North Side have been commonplace in Richmond as a result of repeated December downpours. Location: Lombardy Street and Overbrook Road. This photograph was taken Thursday, Dec. 17, when an inch of rain fell. Nearly 4 inches of rain have fallen on the city since then. Through Wednesday, Richmond had recorded 5.87 inches of rain since Dec. 1. That is 2.7 inches above normal for the month. The arrival of January, though, will shut off the taps. Beginning with Friday, Jan. 1, the weather is forecast to be dry through Thursday, Jan. 7. High temperatures are forecast to be in the 40s and 50s, with lows in the 20s and 30s during the period.

Honoring a pioneer // President Obama presents the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Katherine G. Johnson of Newport News on Nov. 24 during an event in the East Room of the White House. The 97-year-old was one of the few women and African-Americans who worked for NASA when she started as a pool mathematician at the space agency’s Langley Research Center in Hampton in 1953. Her mathematic computations have influenced every major space program from America’s first manned space flight in 1961 to today’s Space Shuttle program. Mrs. Johnson was one of 17 individuals honored last week by President Obama, some posthumously, with the nation’s highest civilian award.

The big Stone Brewery beer production center is heading toward completion in the East End. Location: Williamsburg Avenue and Stony Run Road. The California-based company selected Richmond for its East Coast brewery last October. To help get the plant up and running quickly, the city has borrowed $23 million to build the factory, which the company is to repay in monthly installments over 25 years. The company is directly investing $51 million in the equipment, land and other costs. Brewing is expected to begin early next year, possibly in January. Production could top 120,000 barrels a year and could grow to 500,000 barrels a year. Up to 100 people could be employed there. Separately, the city is beginning to make plans for creating an $8 million restaurant and beer garden for Stone Brewery at the now vacant Intermediate Terminal on the riverfront. The company also would repay the city for that investment. As yet, there has been no indication on when construction of that restaurant and entertainment development might begin. Initially, work on that portion of the project was expected to begin at least two years after the brewery opening.

Remembering Leonard Lambert Sr. // Hundreds of people gathered to remember Leonard W. Lambert Sr. at a funeral service Tuesday at Saint Paul’s Baptist Church in Henrico County. Stirring music filled the sanctuary and family and friends shared warm reflections of Mr. Lambert, who was described as a man of strong faith who left a lasting mark in Metro Richmond by his decades of legal, church and community service. Dr. John W. Kinney, dean of the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University, delivered the eulogy at the service, which also included remarks from Mr. Lambert’s sister, Dr. Elizabeth Johns, Mayor Dwight C. Jones and others. Among his achievements, Mr. Lambert became Richmond’s first African-American judge in 1973 when he was named a substitute judge for the Richmond General District Court. At left, his wife, Sylvia J. Lambert, and other family members leave their pews during the recessional at the conclusion of the service.
