The site of the former Oak Grove Elementary School has been vacant since January 2013 when Oak Grove-Bellemeade Elementary opened its doors. The Redeemer Assembly of Jesus Christ originally lost its bid of $275,000 to purchase the site after a City Council vote in August 2022. In September 2022, City Council approved Lynx Ventures’s request to purchase the site for $500,000.

According to the regional Girl Scouts organization, the cookie program teaches youth members key life skills as they raise money to support the operation and programming that serves 12,000 children and teens in 36 cities and counties. “When you buy cookies, you are helping to power beneficial experiences for girls and build the next generation of female entrepreneurs,” stated Molly T. All was calm at Abner Clay Park in Jackson Ward on Monday, Jan. 15 as snow flurries fell and stuck in several parts of Richmond and surrounding counties. Temperatures stayed in the low 30s, crept to the 40s by Tuesday, but fell back to the 30s by Wednesday. Want more snow? Hang around until Friday and you may get your wish. More than 1,000 at-home COVID-19 test kits were given out in less than three hours Sunday at Henderson Middle School on Old Brook Road in North Side, one of four distribution sites for Richmond Public Schools families. Cars were lined up throughout the neighborhood to pick up the tests. Many people were turned away when the supply ran out.

Residential units represent a big change for the Baker property that had been a school site since 1871. According to the city school system, this building opened in 1940 as a replacement for the worn-out original. Closed as an elementary school in 1979, the building was renamed for a former principal, Katherine L. Johnson, and was used as an alternative school for troubled middle and high school students until 2013 when RPS vacated the building.

Sydney Lester of the Virginia Flaggers carries the Confederate battle flag during his group’s protest last Saturday in front of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts on the Boulevard. The museum has removed the symbol of hate from the Confederate Chapel located behind the museum. Café and bakery debuts at theater // Customers browse at the new 1927 Café and Bakery inside the Altria Theater at Main and Laurel streets across from Monroe Park. The shop opened last week and offers breakfast, lunch and evening bistro fare, along with teas and coffee. The café is open seven days a week to the public and provides additional food and beverage options for show attendees. The name pays tribute to the year when a Masonic group opened the building as The Mosque.

Alfred C. Liggins III, CEO of development partner Urban One, discussed the Richmond Grand Resort and Casino project with about 75 Richmonders at Southern Kitchen Restaurant in Jackson Ward on Monday evening. The proposed $562 million gambling and entertainment complex is a joint venture between Urban One, a diversified media company, and Churchill Downs, the Louisville-based operator of the Kentucky Derby that also runs gambling establishments throughout the country. Two years ago, Richmond voters narrowly rejected a referendum that would have opened the door for a proposed casino. Two years later, the project is back on the Nov. 7 ballot. Mr. Liggins and representatives of Colonial Downs have met with several organizations, including churches and news media representatives to shed light on the revised casino project that promises jobs with an average annual salary of $55,000 and pledges of charitable donations along with $30 million in annual tax revenue for Richmond. The proposed project would be located in a former tobacco company site just off Interstate 95 in south Richmond, the same site that was identified in the first proposal. If the ref- erendum passes, gambling options include slots, an on-site sportsbook and gaming tables. The venue also would include a 250-room hotel, a 55-acre outdoor park, several sit-down dining options and a 3,000-seat concert venue, officials said at Monday’s event. While the venue is expected to attract Richmonders, its developers wager that most of its patrons will come from surrounding cities and states.

Clarence Thornton and his 5-year-old son, Chauncey, spend quality time together Tuesday at Hotchkiss Field in North Side. The youngster, a kindergartener at Richmond Prep, is close to his father and loves spending time outdoors with him. When the two are together, Mr. Thornton says he offers his son lessons on manners and how to play with other youngsters. Cityscape //Work has begun on the long awaited facelift to Kanawha Plaza, a once popular jazz and R&B concert site that sits above the Downtown Expressway between 8th, 9th, Canal and Byrd streets. City Hall has awarded a $2.94 million contract to Ashland-based Southwood Building Systems, which competed against four other companies to renovate the city park. More trees and green space are promised, along with improved space for community programs and events, when the work is completed later this year.
