The waters of the James River rage through Richmond on Monday, fueled by fives days of heavy rain last week. During the weekend, the river crested 3 feet above the 8-foot flood stage in Downtown before returning to its banks this week. The Richmond area got soaked, with nearly 8.5 inches of rain between May 15 and May 19, according to the National Weather Service. The heaviest rain hit Friday, May 18, when 3.86 inches fell — a record for that day. The downpour created flash floods that trapped some motorists, toppled trees and temporarily cut off power to thousands of homes and businesses. That downpour followed the 2.67 inches that fell May 17, also a daily record. Ahead, more rain is predicted for the holiday. The forecast calls for sunshine Friday, May 25, with cloudy skies moving in for the weekend. A chance of thunderstorms is expected Saturday, May 26, with cloudy skies Sunday, May 27, and continued cloudy skies and a chance of light rain on Memorial Day, Monday, May 28. Highs are forecast to be the 80s Saturday and Sunday, dipping into the upper 70s on the holiday.

The Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU’s new Children’s Tower officially opened April 30. The event featured VCU Police to help the patients settle in their new rooms and approximately 50 first responders that flashed their vehicle lights while patients’ flashlights beamed from their hospital windows. However, many observers found the sudden, unexpected 15- minutes wail of sirens from emergency responders disturbing and even triggering given Richmond’s recent propensity for gun violence with young people among many of its victims. When asked about the alarms, Kate Marino, manager for strategy, marketing and enterprise marketing for the VCU Health System, said: “The purpose of goodnight lights was to “The purpose of goodnight lights was to show the children and their families that there is a whole community surrounding and supporting them. First responder units from throughout the region came out and the reaction from inside the hospital was overwhelmingly positive. However, we hope that future displays intended to reflect a space where children can find comfort and healing are less about sounds associated with trauma and more about sensitivity and tranquility.

Construction of a new Amazon facility is scheduled for completion in Henrico County’s Fairfield District this year. When the online retailer announced plans in April 2021 for its state-of-the art robotics fulfillment center on 119 acres along Richmond-Henrico Turnpike, near Richmond Raceway, Amazon and county officials said it would lead to 1,000 job opportunities. The 2.6-million-square-foot facility will be the largest building in Central Virginia, officials said. To accommodate increased traffic in the area, Richmond-Henrico Turnpike has been extended to four lanes, with a new traffic signal placed at the main entrance to the site. “Amazon has been proud to call Virginia home since 2006,” said Alicia Boler Davis, who was Amazon’s vice president of Global Customer Fulfillment at the time of the announcement. “Collectively it takes a strong workforce and local support network to serve our customers across the Commonwealth and the region. The launch of this state-of-the-art fulfillment center in Central Virginia will create more than 1,000 jobs with industry-leading pay and benefits starting on the first day of employment. I’m excited to see Virginians continue to excel at Amazon, building better and brighter futures.”

Honoring the past // When the headstone of a prominent Richmond physician born into slavery around 1852 was taken last year from historic East End Cemetery, his descendants and other volunteers raised money to purchase a new headstone. The new marker for Dr. Richard F. Tancil was dedicated Oct. 22 during a short ceremony at the cemetery to honor the remarkable man who graduated from Howard University’s medical school and set up a practice in Church Hill. He also started the Nickel Savings Bank in 1896, and operated it out of his East End home. Instrumental in replacing the grave marker are, standing from left, Dr. Tancil’s great-granddaughter-in-law, Susan Mitchell; John Shuck, coordinator of cleanup and restoration efforts at East End Cemetery; Jess Kilgore, Melissa Pocock and Bruce Tarr. Also, kneeling from left, Brian Palmer, Justin Curtis and Erin Palmer. East End Cemetery, established around 1897, is the final resting place for more than 13,000 people, including pioneering educator and civic leader Rosa D. Bowser; Hezekiah F. Jonathan, vice president of Mechanics Savings Bank; and William Custalo, longtime proprietor of the Custalo House bar and restaurant on Broad Street.

The goal is to ensure children receive nutritious meals when school is not in session. In past years, only 35 percent of city youths who receive free meals at school took advantage of the summer program. Mobile phones are making it simpler to find locations. Armstrong Renaissance is heading to the finish line after more than three years of construc- tion at this East End site near the city’s border with Henrico County. Crews now are focusing on development of the final phase – 36 attached and detached homes to be sold at market rates – that will cap the redevelopment on the former site of Armstrong High School. Oversized compared with most of the homes on nearby streets, the new houses were initially priced between $225,000 and $350,000 and are designed to add a residential cachet to the area. When finished, the total 22-acre development will contain 256 modern apartments and houses. The first residents moved in just before Thanksgiving in 2019. Previously called Church Hill North, Armstrong Renaissance is the creation of a partnership of the Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority and the Boston-based nonprofit affordable housing developer, The Community Builders. The project is designed as the first step in the future redevelopment of the 30-acre Creighton Court public housing community located across Nine Mile Road. The new units were used, in part, to relocate Creighton Court residents, clearing the way for a large chunk of the public housing community to be bulldozed and replaced with new units. Demolition of a major portion of Creighton Court is expected this year. Mayor Levar M. Stoney and Richmond City Council cleared the way by allocating $6.8 million in federal American Rescue Plan Act funds to pay for new streets, alleys and underground utilities in the Creighton Court redevelopment.
