The group of about 75 gathered at City Hall, with its numbers dwindling as it made its way to the area near Virginia Commonwealth University’s campus. Mayor Levar M. Stoney, front center, talks with special guests at a ceremony Oct. 9 in Richmond City Council Chambers proclaiming Monday, Oct. 12, as Indigenous Peoples’ Day in the city. This is the second year the city has honored the day, which was formerly dedicated to Christopher Columbus, who many view as exploiting indigenous people. In June, a statue of Columbus was pulled down from its perch in Byrd Park by protesters and dragged into Fountain Lake. The city now has the statue in storage. Guests at the ceremony are, from left, Keith Anderson of Portsmouth and Chief Samuel Bass of Suffolk, both of the Nansemond Indian Nation; Reggie Tupponce Jr. of Glen Allen, administrator of the Upper Mattaponi Indian Tribe; Shereen Waterlily of Richmond, a representative of the Mattaponi Tribe; Dr. Denise L. Walters of Henrico, a member of the Nottoway Tribe Council; and Pamunkey Chief Robert Gray of King William County. Monday also was proclaimed Indigenous Peoples’ Day in Virginia for the first time. In a statement, Gov. Northam said the state and the nation “too often failed to live up to our commitments with those who were the first stewards of the lands we now call Virginia — and they have suffered historic injustices as a result. “Indigenous Peoples’ Day celebrates the resilience of our tribal communities and promotes reconciliation, healing, and continued friendship with Virginia’s Indian tribes,” the statement continued. “In making this proclamation, we pay tribute to the culture, history, and many contributions of Virginia Indians and recommit to cultivating strong government-to-government partnerships that are grounded in mutual trust and respect.” Virginia is home to 11 state-recognized Indian tribes, seven of which also are federally recognized.

McGruff the Crime Dog, Richmond Police Chief Gerald M. Smith, Mayor Levar M. Stoney and other city officials came out Tuesday evening for National Night Out, the annual police-sponsored event to build bridges within the community. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, the event, typically held in August, was moved to Oct. 6. Richmond held a scaled-down celebration with McGruff as part of a police motorcade that made stops at seven community events throughout the city, beginning with the kickoff at the Jefferson Davis Civic Association’s event in South Side.

Richmond Police officers remove belongings on July 30 from “Grace Park,” a two-month-old encampment created by protesters, after residents of the area complained. Location: The grassy median at Allen Avenue and Grace Street north of the Lee statue on Monument Avenue. On the same day, police also cleared a similar camp on the Monument Avenue median north of the camp. Two people were arrested. By Monday, activists were once again distributing food, water and literature from tables in the Allen Avenue medians. Participants said police officers were regularly checking, but mostly appeared to condone the activity. However, they said police issued warnings against overnight stays on the medians. Police reported that about 11:15 p.m. July 30, shots were fired into a vehicle near the Lee statue circle following an altercation and that the glass door of a residence in the 1600 block of Monument Avenue had been shattered by reported gunfire. Officers canvassing the area found a rifle and ammunition magazines. “Gunfire and violent behavior is not peaceful, nonviolent protest; it is criminal, unacceptable and will not be tolerated in our city,” Richmond Police Chief Gerald M. Smith said in a statement. “The City of Richmond will take all necessary steps to protect residents and visitors and preserve peace and public safety in our communities.”

The barriers were removed last weekend, enabling westbound traffic to move past the building again. police several nights, resulting in officers firing tear gas and rubber bullets into the crowds. The concrete bar- riers were installed after the tires were slashed on dump trucks that initially were used as barriers and the front door to the headquarters building was damaged. New Police Chief Gerald M. Smith authorized the barriers to be removed after the front door was fixed and most of the trucks were removed. Before the installation, the department put high priority on protecting the building after a Minneapolis police building was torched following the police killing of George Floyd on May 25 in Minnesota. Also prompting the barriers was a rumor that protesters would attempt to ram the building with a tractor-trailer. No attempt was made.

Members of the Delver Woman’s Club of Richmond celebrate the group’s 75th anniversary through its Legacy Community Service Project – a contribution of $5,685 to Feed More, Central Virginia’s primary hunger relief organization. The ceremony, held June 30 outside Feed More’s North Side headquarters, featured a musical prelude by the Jason Jenkins Quartet. The women’s club, which traces its early roots to a literary club for African-American women, was officially started in 1945 and has dedicated itself to civic engagement and service. The club’s 75th anniversary theme: “The Past, The Present, The Future: Continued Commitment to the Community.” In 1967, the club was among the founding members of Meals on Wheels, a program that delivers meals to seniors in their homes and which now comes under Feed More’s umbrella of agencies. The gift to Feed More by the Delver Woman’s Club’s 70 members, their families and friends will provide 22,740 meals to people in the Richmond area. Participating in the program are, from left, Jean T. Williams, legacy project chair; Theo S. Jones, immediate past president; Douglas H. Pick, Feed More’s president and chief executive officer; and Kathryn Erhardt, Feed More’s manager of planned and leadership giving.
