Milton Thompson, left, and Monique Mines-Talley, the parents of 17-year-old Eumiyah Thompson, attend a vigil celebrating the life of their daughter who was shot and killed Dec. 18 while on her front porch of the family’s apartment in Gilpin Court as she was talking with a friend. Her friend was wounded by the gunfire. Eumiyah was a senior at Spartan Academy on West Leigh Street and was expected to graduate in June, her mother said. “That was my baby,” Ms. Mines-Talley said at the vigil held Dec. 27 in Gilpin Court. It was organized by Charles D. Willis, executive director of United Communities Against Crime. Prayers and candles were part of the somber ceremony.

It also signals that the Civil War, which ravaged the nation for four long years, would soon come to an end. In celebration of the 150th anniversary of the liberation of Richmond and its people from the bonds of slavery, the Free Press is publishing a three-part series providing an overview of the African-American experience in the war and in Richmond and vicinity during this momentous time. Fun, sun and watermelon // Kristopher Adams, 6, and his sister, Kristianna, 5, cool off with some juicy watermelon last Sunday at the 34th Annual Carytown Watermelon Festival in Richmond. The free event attracts an estimated 118,000 people each year. In addition to collectively devouring a few thousand watermelons, the crowd enjoyed entertainment from 50 bands and other performers on five stages and browsed the wares of more than 100 street vendors and retail store merchants.

Music and food from around the world were among the attractions at the International Food Festival sponsored recently by the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. Her mother and sister, not pictured, were also along for the fun. The Labor Day holiday weekend will see cooler temperatures in the 70s on Saturday and Sunday with rain possible. Showers are expected to move out by Monday, with highs in the mid-80s. Area schools will open Tuesday to a forecast of sunny skies, with temperatures in the high 80s.

Three-year-old Zara takes a short drumming lesson with her father, Babs, an artist originally from West Africa who now lives in Richmond. Babs, whose paintings include landscapes and African wildlife, was among the bevy of artists participating last Saturday in the 2nd Annual Art Under the Pines exhibition at Pine Camp Cultural Arts & Community Center’s Sculpture Garden.
