At the invitation of Charles Willis, executive director of United Communities Against Crime, various officials including Gov. Glenn Youngkin, Mayor Levar M. Stoney, interim Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards, Henrico Police Chief Eric D. English, Delegate Delores L. McQuinn, Richmond NAACP President J.J. Minor and various members of local police units came together at Jackson Ward’s Abner Clay Park on Jan. 30 to honor the life of 29-year-old Tyre Nichols of Memphis, Tenn. Current and retired Richmond Police officers, including Henrico Police Chief Eric English, join Acting Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards, right, on Sunday, May 7, in commemorating the hiring of Richmond’s first black officers 77 years ago. This annual ceremony sponsored by Engine Co. #9 and Associates was held at the Virginia Historic Marker at Leigh Street and Brook Road near the site of the precinct where the officers were first assigned. The marker reads, “On 1 May 1946, Richmond’s first professional African American police officers were hired and assigned to the First Precinct at Smith and Marshall Streets. They were Howard T. Braxton, Doctor P. Day, Frank S. Randolph, and John W. Vann. On 16 December 1949, Ruth B. Blair became the first professional African American female police officer hired and assigned to the Juvenile Division. On 18 July 1964, Sergeant Randolph was promoted to Detective Lieutenant. While challenged by segregated conditions and discriminatory practices, their perseverance created an inspiring legacy.”

Colette W. McEachin is sworn in as Richmond’s new commonwealth’s attorney Tuesday morning by Judge Joi Jeter Taylor, chief judge of the Richmond Circuit Court, as Mrs. McEachin’s proud mother, Gladys Wallace, holds the Bible. Mrs. McEachin’s husband, Congressman A. Donald McEachin of Richmond, Richmond Circuit Court Clerk Edward F. Jewett and several of Mrs. McEachin’s deputy commonwealth’s attorneys also attended the ceremony at the John Marshall Courts Building in Downtown. Mrs. McEachin, who has more than 20 years of experience as a city prosecutor, took over the top job after veteran Commonwealth’s Attorney Michael N. Herring left July 1 to become a partner in the McGuireWoods law firm. Mr. Herring, who recommended Mrs. McEachin for the top post, is backing her in the Nov. 5 special election when voters will formally choose his successor.
