Virginia War Memorial, Navy League commemorate Pearl Harbor

The Virginia War Memorial and the Navy League of the United States, Richmond Chapter, will co-host the 82nd Commonwealth’s Pearl Harbor Day Remembrance Ceremony on Dec. 7 at 11 a.m. The ceremony will be outdoors in the Memorial’s Shrine of Memory — 20th Century at 621 S. Belvidere St. The public is invited and should dress accordingly.

Richmond employees gain new benefits

In a bid to ramp up retention of current workers and recruiting of new workers to fill hundreds of vacancies, City Hall plans to improve benefits offered to employees in the area of workforce training and home purchase assistance. Topping the list is a new partnership between the city government and Reynolds Community College’s Community College Workforce Alliance.

Varina church hosts men’s conference

A Virginia state senator, a former field director for the Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr.’s Rainbow PUSH Coalition and a former executive director at the Virginia State Conference NAACP are among a diverse array of speakers slated for Antioch Baptist Church’s men’s conference this weekend. The conference is free. Sessions will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 13; 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 14; and 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 15.

Saint Paul’s Baptist hosts community forums

Saint Paul’s Baptist Church in Henrico County is hosting a series of forums in May designed to bring citizens, law enforcement officials and faith leaders together. The theme: “Everybody Matters: A Community Discussion about Race, Justice and the Church.” The purpose: “For all persons and leaders to understand the criminal justice system and better engage with one another,” according to event organizer and church member Antoinette Irving, president of the AVI Foundation Inc., a Richmond-based nonprofit whose mission is to provide programs for youths in disadvantaged communities.

New street sign unveiled to honor Alicia C. Rasin

Mayor Dwight C. Jones and others gathered Monday in Church Hill to unveil an honorary street sign in Church Hill for Alicia C. Rasin, a longtime advocate for families of homicide victims in the city. Ms. Rasin, who was known as the city’s “Ambassador of Compassion,” died in October. Ms. Rasin’s sisters, Patricia Rasin Smith and Albertina Rasin Walker, attended the ceremony, along with City Council member Cynthia I. Newbille, 7th District.-

Gooden new state secretary of agriculture and forestry

Dr. Basil I. Gooden is well suited for his new job as Virginia’s secretary of agriculture and forestry. Dr. Gooden grew up raising beef cattle on his family’s farm in Buckingham County. He also was appointed by President Obama as Virginia director of rural development for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in May 2014. In announcing Dr. Gooden’s appointment to the state cabinet position July 7, Gov. Terry McAuliffe praised him for his leadership and vision.
