Construction fencing rings Virginia Commonwealth University’s old Franklin Street Gymnasium that soon will be demolished. Opened initially in 1952 and expanded in 1970 in the 800 block of West Franklin Street, the former home of the university’s basketball team is no longer needed. The building will be replaced with a modern $121 million structure filled with labs and classrooms focused on boosting student learning in such fields as biology, chemistry, kinesiology, math, physics and psychology. The planned, six-story structure will provide a space where learning, research and collaboration can occur across disciplines.

The 24-year-old Armstrong High School graduate and soprano, who aspires to a career in opera, sings in French, German, Italian, Latin and English. She also is a member of the chorus of the Virginia Opera. Ms. Filmore is the daughter of Robinette and Alfonzia Filmore, owner-operator of the Richmond- based HGFB Bus Charters Inc.

Last Sunday hundreds of women and their supporters, including First Lady Pam Northam, center, celebrate Virginia being the 38th state to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment. The event, Celebrate! 38, included a rally, speakers and a march from Monroe Park to the State Capitol on March 8, International Women’s Day. Thanks to a Democratic majority in the General Assembly for the first time in more than two decades, the ERA was approved in January. Thirty-eight states are needed to ratify any amendment to the U.S. Constitution. But the ERA’s future is uncertain, in part, because the 1982 deadline for ratification enacted by Congress was not met. Attorneys general from Virginia and other states have filed a lawsuit arguing that the deadline was not binding and seek to force federal officials to adopt the measure that would guarantee women equal rights under the law. Speakers at last Sunday’s rally included Kate Kelly, a human rights attorney at Equality Now; Kamala Lopez, founder and co-director of Equal Means Equal; Liza Mickens, the great-great-granddaughter of the renowned banker and women’s empowerment advocate Maggie L. Walker; and Andrea Miller, executive director of the Poor People’s Campaign of Virginia.

Signs of spring abound, from robins to daffodils to baseball. Here, Nutzy, the mascot of the Richmond Flying Squirrels, climbs the steps of The Diamond baseball stadium to kick off the team’s first event of its 11th season — a block party last Saturday at the stadium on Arthur Ashe Boulevard. Nutzy’s Block Party included live music, dancing, local vendors and ballpark tours. It was the first opportunity for fans to buy game tickets before the season home opener on Thursday, April 16, against the Bowie Baysox of Maryland. The Richmond Flying Squirrels are the Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants.
