This dazzling holiday scene now greets motorists and pedestrians nightly as they pass the James Center on Cary and 10th streets in Downtown. The lights went on Nov. 30 at Richmond’s 34th Annual Grand Illumination to usher in the season. The lights will come on each evening through New Year’s Day, Jan. 1. More than 2,000 people erupt into cheers at the coming of 2020 at the Science Museum of Virginia’s Noon Year’s Eve celebration. At the stroke of noon on Dec. 31, confetti dropped from the top of the rotunda as youngsters and their families celebrated New Year’s early on Tuesday. The annual celebration is geared to the young and those who have a hard time staying up until midnight to welcome the new year.

Judge Joi Jeter Taylor beams happily after being sworn in to the Richmond Circuit Court. Family, friends, judicial colleagues, members of the legal community and area elected officials were on hand March 12 for her investiture ceremony at the John Marshall Courts Building in Downtown. Judge Taylor actually joined the court Dec. 1 after serving nearly 17 years as a Richmond General District Court judge. The General Assembly elected her in late September to succeed Richmond Circuit Court Judge Margaret P. Spencer, who retired from the bench last summer. A Howard University Law School graduate, Judge Taylor served 15 years as an assistant attorney general before she went on the bench in 1998.

Santa seemingly is coming down the chimney in a storefront on Grace Street between 5th and 6th streets in the old Miller & Rhoads building in Downtown Richmond. Santa Claus, the legendary figure who is the traditional patron of Christmas in the United States and other coun- tries, brings gifts to children (and many grown-ups, too). His popular image is based on traditions associated with Saint Nicholas, a fourth-century Christian saint, according to Britannica. Miller & Rhoads was a Virginia-based department store chain with its Richmond location known for its “SantaLand” upstairs attraction. It closed in 1990, according to Wikipedia.

CITYSCAPE-As these photos show, iconic cement silos, left, in the East End have come down. The once proud symbols of Lehigh Cement Co. were demolished in the past two weeks as part of $10 million in improvements the city is undertaking along the north bank of the James River. Winchester-based Howard Shockey & Sons Inc., which did not have any minority partners, cleared the silos, whose site is to be a park. Other projects: The $4 million city portion of the Virginia Capital Trail to which the city contributed $820,000 and the Low-Line Project, a $1.4 million landscaping venture alongside the trail to which the city contributed $200,000 and private sources are donating $1.2 million.
