McGruff the Crime Dog, Richmond Police Chief Gerald M. Smith, Mayor Levar M. Stoney and other city officials came out Tuesday evening for National Night Out, the annual police-sponsored event to build bridges within the community. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, the event, typically held in August, was moved to Oct. 6. Richmond held a scaled-down celebration with McGruff as part of a police motorcade that made stops at seven community events throughout the city, beginning with the kickoff at the Jefferson Davis Civic Association’s event in South Side.

Lauding Lauderdale // Mary C. Lauderdale, operations manager of the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia, is surprised with a celebration last Friday honoring her 20 years of service at the museum in Jackson Ward. A steady fixture at the museum, Ms. Lauderdale has performed numerous jobs during her tenure, including chief docent, gift shop manager, head of visitor services and museum manager. The surprise event featured African drummers, speeches by area artists and museum board members, presentation of a portrait by Richmond artists Jerome Jones Jr. and his son, Jeromyah Jones, a champagne toast, cake and hors d’oeuvres.

City Council elects new leaders: Richmond City Councilwoman Cynthia I. Newbille, 7th District, makes a point Monday after being elected president of Richmond’s governing body. Previously vice president, Dr. Newbille swapped positions with Councilman Chris A. Hilbert, 3rd District, who had been president. He nominated Dr. Newbille and then was elected vice president. In this file photo, Richmond Police release tear gas on demonstrators at the Lee Monument on Monument Avenue on June 1, 2020, during the third day of local protests against police brutality and racial injustice following the murder of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis Police on May 28, 2020. The crowd that included families with children was tear-gassed about 20 minutes ahead of that day’s 8 p.m. curfew. Then-Police Chief William Smith, who apologized along with Mayor Levar M. Stoney the next day, later resigned and promised to discipline the officers. Six people later filed a lawsuit, which was settled by the City of Richmond in February. The terms were not disclosed.

Warming hearts one coat at a time // Todd “Parney” Parnell, vice president and chief operating officer of the Richmond Flying Squirrels, works with team mascots Nutzy, left, and Nutasha to load coats in a van last Saturday during the 8th Annual Coats for Kids and Ballpark Warming Party at The Diamond. The Flying Squirrels were working with Coats for Kids sponsor, Puritan Cleaners, which collects about 15,000 coats for youngsters each November. The donated coats are washed, repaired and delivered to the Salvation Army for distribution to needy families in Central Virginia. The collection event at The Diamond was part of the free Ballpark Warming Party, where fans of all ages enjoyed live music, chili tasting, crafts, games and raffle prizes, including baseball memorabilia.

Final performance: Larry Bland & The Volunteer Choir give a joyful, final performance Sunday to an appreciative crowd of worshippers at St. Peter Baptist Church in Henrico County. Mr. Bland, 65, is retiring as director and chief organizer of the gospel performance group that has brought inspirational music to the region for 50 years. Mr. Bland also sang and played piano with The Volunteer Choir that has about 25 active singers. He and the choir received several ovations during the service, led by Dr. Kirkland R. Scores of people turned out Aug. 6 for the official unveiling of the mural honoring the first Black firefighters hired by the City of Richmond. The 10 trailblazers were hired July 1, 1950, and were stationed at Engine Company No. 9 at 5th and Duval streets in Jackson Ward. The commemorative mural was done by local artists Sir James Thornhill, Jason Ford and Kevin Orlosky, and is situated on the side of the Mocha Temple No. 7 Shrine building at 613 N. 2nd St. in Jackson Ward. Members of Mocha Temple pose for a group photo with, at center, Mayor Levar M. Stoney; Mr. Thornhill; and Fire Chief Melvin D. Carter. The unveiling was the kickoff of a weekend of activities sponsored by Engine Company #9 and Associates remembering and honoring the original firefighters.

Elias Neujahr, president of the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at Virginia Commonwealth University, welcomes families, hospital workers and elected officials to the hospital’s ceremonial ribbon-cutting on March 28. The new building, known as the Children’s Tower, is adjacent to the hospital’s Children’s Pavilion and will house in-patient, trauma and emergency care. The barriers were removed last weekend, enabling westbound traffic to move past the building again. police several nights, resulting in officers firing tear gas and rubber bullets into the crowds. The concrete bar- riers were installed after the tires were slashed on dump trucks that initially were used as barriers and the front door to the headquarters building was damaged. New Police Chief Gerald M. Smith authorized the barriers to be removed after the front door was fixed and most of the trucks were removed. Before the installation, the department put high priority on protecting the building after a Minneapolis police building was torched following the police killing of George Floyd on May 25 in Minnesota. Also prompting the barriers was a rumor that protesters would attempt to ram the building with a tractor-trailer. No attempt was made.
