As Black History Month gets underway, this dramatic mural provides an artistic celebration of the people and events who represent protest, progress and achievement. Location: 504 W. Broad St. in Downtown. Richmond artists Ed Trask and Jason Ford created the mural, called “Voices of Perseverance,” as part of the Mending Walls RVA initiative. Launched by muralist Hamilton Glass, Mending Walls aims to bring together artists to develop projects that spark empathy and dialogue. Mr. Glass came up with the idea during the upheaval over racial justice and police misconduct that led to the removal of most of the city’s Confederate statues.

Jones, pastors of First Baptist Church of South Richmond, get a closer look at the new bronze sculpture “Hope Empowered by the Truth” with its creator, local artist Kathleen Lowry. The 150-pound sculpture was unveiled at the Decatur Street church on Monday, the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday, during a ceremony viewed online by more than 200 people. Ms. Lowry donated the piece to the church after attending the socially distanced kickoff last September of First Baptist’s yearlong 200th anniversary celebration. She said the church seemed like the perfect home for the sculpture. “It is recognition of the work you do every day to promote peace in our country,” she said during Monday’s event. “Martin Luther King knew what would be necessary — faith, hopefulness, truth-telling, courage, resilience, kindness and forgiveness. And that is what you are doing and being in the struggle for equality and peace. It is an extremely tall order.” Members of the congregation will be able to see the artwork once the church reopens for in-person worship service. The church has held virtual services because of the pandemic.

A “Black Lives Matter” banner hangs in October on the wall in front of a Monument Avenue residence near Allen Avenue, the epicenter of protests over racial injustice and police brutality since May. Signs like this one and logos with BLM have become commonplace on businesses and other buildings in and near Downtown and the Lee monument following an early spate of damage. Two signs depict the old and the new when it comes to the name of this North Side street whose residents include U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine and his wife, Anne B. Holton. The aging street sign still reads Con- federate Avenue, while the sign in the next picture, in the median, displays the new name City Council officially approved last month for the street — Laburnum Park Boulevard. Call it protest art Christmas-style. This new artwork now stands at the base the Robert E. Lee statue on Monument Avenue. The Black figure tops a fir tree, a traditional Christmas symbol, and adds a holiday dimension to the protest slogans and colorful artwork that have transformed the pedestal that holds the Confederate statue that the state is still battling in court to take down. The pedestal, which gained its new look during the late spring and summer protests over racial injustice and police brutality, has become a significant attraction for residents and visitors. The pedestal’s changed appearance also has garnered national attention, with the New York Times naming it No. 1 on its list of protest art and National Geographic featuring it on the cover of its special issue, “2020: The year in Pictures.”

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts celebrated the first anniversary of the unveiling of the equestrian statue “Rumors of War” by artist Kehinde Wiley with a collection of visual animations and digital collages projected onto the museum building on Arthur Ashe Boulevard. The visual anniversary projections, which ran nightly from Dec. 10 through Dec. 12, were done for the VMFA by Dustin Klein and Alex Criqui, Richmond artists who have gained national attention for their projections onto the Robert E. Lee statue on Monument Avenue. It also included audio recordings of Mr. Wiley and his remarks from 2019, when the statue was dedicated. The 27-foot tall statue, located outside the museum, features a young African-American man with dreadlocks, jeans and high-top sneakers sitting regally on horseback. The artist said his work was a direct response to the Confederate statues that lined Monument Avenue.

Richmond’s skyline comes to life during the holiday season, with the glow of lights embracing Downtown and the riverfront. The seasonal lighting officially got underway Friday, Dec. 4, with RVA Illuminates. That’s when the lights simultaneously go on after a countdown by city officials and others. Because of the pandemic, the ceremony was held virtually this year and broadcast on ABC 8News and on WRIC’s website. Holiday Lights on the Riverfront, presented by Venture Richmond, followed, with decorative lights going on at Brown’s Island to the Turning Basin on the Canal Walk. Entertainers and hot beverages also are a part of the riverfront celebration, which will continue from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12 and Dec. 19. Radio personality “Miss Community” Clovia Lawrence of Urban One gets a big surprise last Saturday when Gov. Ralph S. Northam, center, and Lt. Gov. Justin E. Fairfax, left, show up during her 17th Annual Toy Drive outside the Walmart store on Sheila Lane in South Side and present her with proclamations honoring her 30 years of community work. The surprise presentation was organized by Christopher J. Woody of the Woody Foundation. Ms. Lawrence started the toy drive in 2004 to assist working families who couldn’t afford gifts for their children during the holiday season. Since then, more than 60,000 donated toys have been given to Richmond area families. Even as she was being honored, Ms. Lawrence was busy encouraging shoppers to purchase and donate toys for youngsters in need.
