CITYSCAPE-As these photos show, iconic cement silos, left, in the East End have come down. The once proud symbols of Lehigh Cement Co. were demolished in the past two weeks as part of $10 million in improvements the city is undertaking along the north bank of the James River. Winchester-based Howard Shockey & Sons Inc., which did not have any minority partners, cleared the silos, whose site is to be a park. Other projects: The $4 million city portion of the Virginia Capital Trail to which the city contributed $820,000 and the Low-Line Project, a $1.4 million landscaping venture alongside the trail to which the city contributed $200,000 and private sources are donating $1.2 million.

O’Rourke campaigns in Henrico: Democratic presidential hopeful Beto O’Rourke stumps for support in Henrico County on Tuesday night, one of several stops in the state. The former Texas congressman talked up his values and his policy views in making his initial foray into Virginia. Mr. O’Rourke drew an enthusiastic crowd of more than 800 people to the event sponsored by the Henrico County Democratic Committee at a hotel in Short Pump. He is running in a crowded field of Democrats seeking the party’s nomination. Other contenders are expected to hit Virginia in the coming weeks and months. Former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe reportedly was to announce Wednesday night that he is not running for president. (Ava Reaves)

Booklovers who want to share their love of reading have placed a Little Free Library in their yard in the 1600 block of Laburnum Avenue in North Side. The national nonprofit Little Free Library program is a free book exchange that encourages people to come and pick a book to read and leave one for others to take for free. The mission is to build a sense of community along with a love of reading by providing free book access to all. The Little Free Library idea was started in 2009 in Wisconsin and has grown across the nation and the globe. Today, there are 90,000 registered mini-libraries in all 50 states and more than 90 countries, including dozens within Metro Richmond. For a map of locations, go to www.littlefreelibrary.org.

David Carter, 49, an employee of the Richmond Department of Public Works, receives the single-dose Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine May 5 during a walk-up vaccination clinic held at George Wythe High School by the Richmond and Henrico health districts. No appointments are needed for the health districts’ clinics. The school at 4314 Crutchfield St. in South Richmond will be among several sites offering inoculations during the coming days. The next vaccine clinics at George Wythe will be noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 18, and 3 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 19. The Johnson & Johnson vaccine will be available, along with the two- dose Pfizer vaccine.

Crabs & Q Crabs, gumbo and burgers were among the plentiful fare last Saturday at “Coming Out of the Corona Crab & Q,” a free community event in the East End encouraging people to vote, stop the violence, get vaccinated against COVID-19 and advocate for new city schools to be built. Hundreds of people enjoyed the food, music and camaraderie being outdoors and in the sunshine. The event, held outside the Bacon Retirement Community at 815 N. 35th St., was sponsored by James E. “JJ” Minor III, and numerous groups, including the Richmond Branch NAACP, the Help Me Help You Foundation, United Communities Against Crime and health care organizations.
