Boone, were honored with 2019 Community Healer Awards on Aug. 21 as part of the Valuing Black Lives Global Summit held by the Community Healing Network at Virginia Union University. The flags of 83 countries — from Algeria to Venezuela — are on display in Shockoe Bottom in honor of the international cyclists coming to race on the streets of Richmond and nearby localities later this month. Location: Near 15th and East Main streets in the parking lot across from Main Street Station. The flags represent the many nations likely to send riders. The flags are lashed to concrete pillars that support the Interstate 95 overpass. They will serve as a backdrop for race-related events at the train station, the city said. The start-finish line for many of the cycling contests will be on Broad Street at the Greater Richmond Convention Center, which also will provide a major gathering area for fans. The city said world flags also will be on display on Broad Street during the opening ceremony Sept. 18. The UCI Road World Championships are set to run Sept. 19 through 27. Richmond is the first U.S. city to host the races in 29 years.

Jasmine Howell and her son, Aiden Howell, 4, relax and listen to speakers after participating in the Unity Walk through the Museum District last Friday to commemorate the 57th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Speakers at the event, organized by Coming to the Table, recited excerpts from Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech that was delivered at the 1963 march. The walk also marked the 65th anniversary of the lynching of Emmett Till, a 14-year-old from Chicago who was brutally murdered in Money, Miss., in 1955 for allegedly whistling at a white woman. His lynching, and a photo of his disfigured body lying in a casket that was published by JET magazine, drew widespread public attention to the brutality Black people faced, particularly in the South, and helped mobilize the Civil Rights Movement.

Dr. Joanne Harris Lucas proudly stands beside a bust of her late father and Virginia civil rights leader, the Rev. Curtis W. Harris Sr., which was unveiled Saturday in front of Hopewell City Hall, where he served for 26 years on the city council and for two years as the city’s first Black mayor. The unveiling comes six years after his death in December 2017. He was arrested 13 times in leading protests against segregation in Hopewell and other parts of the state and led the Hopewell Branch NAACP and the Virginia Chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference for more than 20 years. During his 46 years as pastor of Union Baptist Church in Hopewell and during his tenure on council, he fought for environmental justice and opposed Hopewell commercial developments that impacted Black and poor people in the city.

Mandala: Sacred art/Tibetan Buddhist monks from the Drepung Loseling Monastery in India create a sand mandala at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts recently to share Tibet’s sacred visual and performing arts with area audiences. Runners take off during the inaugural RUN RICHMOND 16.19 that started and ended at Kanawha Plaza in Downtown Richmond on Saturday, Sept. 17. The run was organized by actor and model Djimon Hounsou’s foundation in collaboration with The Black History Museum & Cultural Center of Virginia and Sports Backers. The run shines a light on the achievements of the Black community over the past 400 plus years with the designated courses of 16.19 km and 6.19 miles. As the runners proceed on the course they pass various historical Black sites throughout the city.

Cityscape //Last April, it was just a hole in the ground. Now the $6.3 million Eggleston Plaza is taking shape at 2nd and Leigh streets in Jackson Ward. When completed in 2017, the project will include 31 apartments and a first-floor restaurant. The building occupies the former site of Eggleston Hotel, one of the few places that civil rights leaders, entertainers and other African-Americans could stay during the era of segregation when most city hotels barred non-white guests. The old hotel collapsed and the site was cleared in 2009. The plaza sits across from the renovated Hippodrome Theater and the Taylor Mansion entertainment, restaurant and residential complex. The development includes another 10 townhouse-style apartments at 1st and Jackson streets that already are being rented.

City Hall is bathed in the blue and yellow of the Ukrainian flag, a nightly display of solidarity with the beleaguered Eastern European nation that is struggling to repel the destructive invasion of the Russian army. The invasion began Feb. 24, the day after Defender of the Fatherland Day in Russia. Russian President Vladimir Putin wants Ukraine to again be a vassal state of Moscow, as it was when the Soviet Union was in existence. The inva- sion is the largest since World War II. Still, the bi-color flag continues to fly as Ukraine resists. The flag has been the symbol of Ukraine since the 12th century when it was part of the Kingdom of Galicia- Volhynia. Banned during Soviet rule after World War I, the flag was restored after Ukraine regained its independence in 1991 with the collapse of the Soviet Union.
