Judge Jamison retiring // Family and friends join in unveiling the portrait of outgoing Judge Birdie Hairston Jamison, right, that will hang in the Richmond General District Court. Judge Jamison, 57, is the dean of the state’s traffic court judges. She began hearing cases in Richmond in 1991. Her tenure on the court officially ends Tuesday, Nov. 30. She must step down because the General Assembly declined to reappoint her to a new term last January. Numerous speakers at the retirement ceremony lauded her service to the court.

Daddy's Home// Former Richmond Justice Center inmate Aziz Scott gained celebrity status this week when he was featured on two national television shows. He is pictured above with his 8-year-old daughter, De’Andra, at the 8th Annual Date with Dad Dinner and Dance at the city jail in March. He and his daughter were shown at the dance, organized by Richmond-based CAMP DIVA, on CNN’s “This Is Life With Lisa Ling” Wednesday and on the “Steve Harvey” talk show Tuesday. The shows described Mr. Scott’s participation in the jail’s REAL program, which stands for Recovering from Everyday Addictive Lifestyles. Mr. Scott, 53, credits his participation in the program for helping him turn his life around. He was released from jail in August after serving 17 months for selling drugs. Assisting in efforts to help Mr. Scott succeed, Mr. Harvey presented him with a $5,000 check to relocate his family to a safer neighborhood.

Million Man March 20 years later - Throngs of people from across the nation flooded the National Mall in Washington for the Justice Or Else rally marking the 20th anniversary of the Million Man March. People of all ages, ethnicities, faiths and backgrounds were drawn to the capital for the event initiated by Nation of Islam leader Minister Louis Farrakhan. Lazarus Charlene C. Harris hoped to live out her years at 1600 Colorado Ave., the single- family brick cottage that she and her family have called home for 47 years. But now the retired 68-year- old state employee is being told she must either purchase the two-bedroom home from her landlord, the Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority, or face moving. “It’s a terrible situation,” she said. “RRHA has told me I have to put up $500 to begin the process and to get a mortgage by December.
