PAST AND FUTURE- At a program marking the 85th anniversary of the Nation of Islam, Melvin K. Ra’Oof, a member of Masjid Bilal in Church Hill, describes plans for a new worship center with Daisha Coleman. The masjid sponsored the event Saturday at the Virginia Commonwealth University Commons celebrating the 1930 start of the offshoot of Islam in Detroit and recalling some of its leaders such as Malcolm X. The masjid and its members are no longer associated with the Nation of Islam. After the 1975 death of leader Elijah Muhammad, Masjid Bilal affiliated with Mr. Muhammad’s late son, Warith Deen Muhammed, who dropped the NOI name and converted his followers to a traditional Sunni form of Islam.

Zeus plays to crowd at Mama J’s // Zeus McClurkin, a member of the legendary Harlem Globetrotters basketball team, captivates the room of 37 George Wythe High School honor students during a special luncheon Wednesday honoring the young people at Mama J’s Kitchen in Jackson Ward. The Columbus, Ohio, native engaged the students with a pep talk before showing off his skills. The event was part of Richmond’s first Black Restaurant Week highlighting black-owned and operated restaurants in the city. The promotion, with fixed-price lunch and dinner specials at 20 restaurants, runs through Sunday, March 12. Mr. McClurkin and the Harlem Globetrotters have an exhibition game 7 p.m. Friday, March 10, at the Richmond Coliseum.

The message is right up front on this GRTC bus, spelling out the new requirement for all riders – a face mask. More than four months into the pandemic — and with 14 employees, including 13 drivers, testing positive for COVID-19 — GRTC imposed the requirement for passengers and drivers to wear a face mask. The company dropped all fares in March and expects to continue the free rides at least through next June. Drivers are allowed to bypass would-be passengers who are not masked. The transit company has acknowledged that it has no means to enforce the rule after passengers board, but hopes they recognize the common sense of wearing a mask to help reduce the spread of the coronavirus.

On Tuesday, Richmonders commemorated the 55th anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, where the speech was delivered, during a program at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School in the East End. Burying the past A small group of mostly young people took shovel to dirt and buried a Confederate flag near the James River on Memorial Day in a symbolic funeral for the symbol of racial hatred. City Hall is being proactive in pushing safe practices during the pandemic. This sign was prominently displayed outside the second floor City Council Chambers on Monday before the nine council members were sworn in — including seven women, the most ever. Only a few people, mostly media and some family members, were allowed in the chamber for the ceremony. Others were able to connect to online channels to see the public ceremony.
