A new historic marker honoring Richmond business and civil rights leader Maggie L. Walker sits in front of the historic St. Luke Building that has stood in the 900 block of St. James Street in Gilpin Court since 1903. Now a 12-unit apartment building with first-floor commercial space, the building began life as the national headquarters of the United Order of St. Luke, a Black fraternal and insurance group led by Mrs. Walker from 1899 until her death in 1934. Making bold moves, she pushed the fraternal order into developing the headquarters and taking other entrepreneurial action, including opening a bank.

A new historic marker honoring Richmond business and civil rights leader Maggie L. Walker sits in front of the historic St. Luke Building that has stood in the 900 block of St. James Street in Gilpin Court since 1903. Donovan Walker, 58, of Richmond helps his godmother Caroline Bennett battle her leaves so she does not have to do it, he said on Tuesday, Nov. 8, during a short break from his task in the 2400 block of 2nd Avenue near Spruce Street. According to the City of Richmond’s website, the leaf collection program began Monday, Nov. 7, for the bagged collection option. The City allows up to 10 bags to be collected on a normal trash day. Other options provided by the city for leaf collection can be found by visiting http://www.rva.gov/public-works or by calling 3-1-1 or 646-LEAF.

In recognition of October as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Mrs. Williams started her first “Robin’s Walk” in October 2020. On Oct. 23, she was joined by family and friends who have shown up each year to support her wellness journey and to build awareness about the disease. Despite the chilly, drizzly afternoon at Henrico County’s Osborne Park, Ms. Williams, along with family (including 18-month-old Kaleb Quivers shown holding a balloon) and friends, completed a 1-mile loop around the park before returning to a picnic shelter for lunch, pink cupcakes (baked by Myra Nelson, Mrs. Williams’ cousin), games and fellowship.

During a June 11 vigil at Abner Clay Park, Rennada Smith Bass, center, of Monroe La. is consoled as she and her family grieve the loss of their brother, Renzo Dell Smith, who was killed Tuesday, June 6 along with his stepson Shawn Jackson, 18. Before being shot, Mr. Jackson had just walked across the stage and received his diploma during his Huguenot High School graduation at Altria Theater. Richmond police note that none of the guns confiscated in the aftermath were brought into the Altria Theater. Police also said that the shooting sprang from a confrontation between Mr. Jackson and the shooter, Amari Pollard.

The holiday season has arrived in Richmond with the official launch party Tuesday at City Hall in Downtown. Mayor Levar M. Stoney helps decorate the city’s first Unity Tree that celebrates Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa during the kick-off event in the first-floor lobby. Tuesday’s festive event also featured the Richmond Police Department’s 11-member brass band performing holiday music. The holiday celebration will continue in the coming days, featuring RVA Illuminates on Friday, Dec. 3, at Kanawha Plaza in Downtown to turn on building lights and the Christmas Parade on Saturday, Dec. 4.

Remembering her brother-Princess Blanding hosts a community remembrance of her brother, Marcus-David Peters, last Saturday on the third anniversary of his death. Mr. Peters, a 24-year-old Virginia Commonwealth University honors graduate and biology teacher, was shot and killed May 14, 2018, by a Richmond Police officer as he was experiencing what some have described as a mental health crisis just off Interstate 95. Ms. Blanding held the anniversary gathering on Monument Avenue, near the Lee monument circle that some renamed Marcus-David Peters Circle. She and other family and friends honored Mr. Peters’ life and called for a federal investigation into his death. Ms. Blanding is running as a Liberation Party candidate for governor.

Nine Richmond families from the Historic Jackson Ward community: Anderson, Barbour, Brown, Bryant, Clay, Cotman, Gilbert, Jefferies and Rodwell gather to learn more about their family history their ancestral DNA through an inaugural project, “Reclaiming Our Time: Genealogy & DNA Big Reveal,” sponsored by the City of Richmond. The Aug.19 program at the Virginia Museum of History and Culture began with processional drumming by the RAM Drum Circle, which ushered in the project’s participants and genealogist, Dr. Paula Royster, CEO, Center for African American Genealogical Research, based in Fredericksburg. Dr. Royster researched each family and presented what she found to the individuals, extended family and others who attended the program.

“That’s my daddy,” said 5-year-old Anais Lewis of Roanoke, while staring at the mural of his father, John R. Lewis, whose image and life was memorialized on May 26 at the Sankofa Community Orchard, 301 Covington Road on Richmond’s South Side. Mr. Lewis, who died in January 2021, taught students how to grow their own food and spent time “hanging out” in the garden, often keeping youngsters out of harm’s way as they got their hands dirty together. Mr. Lewis was the co-founder and executive director of Renew Richmond, a nonprofit that operated several urban agricultural sites and sometimes had pop-up stands where fresh produce that was grown and harvested by local Black youthS and adults was also often sold by them too. He advocated for Black communities to understand the power of gardening and self-sufficiency. Duron Chavis, the founder of the Sankofa Community Garden, said Mr. Lewis was one of the “founding fathers of Black urban agriculture in the City of Richmond.” The mural was created by lead painter Sir James L. Thornhill assisted by R. Vashti Woods, both of Richmond.

Henrico resident Robin Williams, lead right, was diagnosed with breast cancer in May of 2020 during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Mrs. Williams, who is legally blind, relied on her husband, Larry D. Williams for support, in that he was the only family member who could be with her inside the hospital due to the COVID19 restrictions at the time. Mrs. Williams’ breast cancer treatment plan included 16 rounds of radiation at the VCU Massey Cancer Center in Richmond. Since coming home to recover nearly three years ago, Mrs. Williams continually has been supported by her family and friends.

Cityscape: Slices of life and scenes in Richmond-Artist Austin Miles of Petersburg puts the finishing touches last week on this new mural that now decorates Max Market, 1125 Hull St. She is contributing the fine details to the mural that began with a community paint day Oct. 5. The mural is the first of a planned series titled “Brown Girl Narratives” that Kristal Brown, founder and leader of Black Women Cache LLC, is spearheading. This and other murals will help fulfill the goal of the organization, Ms. Brown said, which is “to highlight the lived experiences of black women through media and visual arts.” Next year, the Virginia Commonwealth University doctoral student plans to release a coffee table book focusing on black women and hold other events. Harmony McKenzie, 4, makes her presence known as she attends the March to Fund Safe Schools last Saturday with her grandmother, Katina Harris, president of the Richmond Education Association. About 100 people walked from William Fox Elementary School on Hanover Avenue in The Fan to Monroe Park calling for funding to upgrade or replace Virginia’s aging schools. Before the march, Ms. Harris paused to support a bake sale benefiting the Fox School community in the wake of the Feb. 11 fire that destroyed the building. The school opened in 1911. Many of those attending the march called for a new George Wythe High School to replace the decaying school building in South Side that opened in 1960. Harmony attends the pre-school at Mary Scott School in North Side.

David Carter, 49, an employee of the Richmond Department of Public Works, receives the single-dose Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine May 5 during a walk-up vaccination clinic held at George Wythe High School by the Richmond and Henrico health districts. No appointments are needed for the health districts’ clinics. The school at 4314 Crutchfield St. in South Richmond will be among several sites offering inoculations during the coming days. The next vaccine clinics at George Wythe will be noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 18, and 3 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 19. The Johnson & Johnson vaccine will be available, along with the two- dose Pfizer vaccine.

The 40-foot pedestal where the enormous bronze statue of Confederate Robert E. Lee on horseback once stood on Monument Avenue was finally cleared away Wednesday afternoon by crews working for 14 days. The Lee statue was removed in September. The site is to be cleaned and the ground leveled. The state is expected to turn ownership of the land over to the City of Richmond after Christmas.

The building on the northeast corner of Cary and Belvidere streets is now home to a place “where the future will be invented,” according to Dr. Michael Rao, president of Virginia Commonwealth University. That place is VCU’s new four-story Engineering Research Building, which formally opened Feb. 3 in a virtual ribbon-cutting ceremony. Begun in 2018, the $93 million facility expands laboratory space for advanced research and includes fully equipped space for students to test ideas and create prototypes. Officials said that, among other things, the center enables students from art, business and other disciplines to come together with engineering students and faculty to investigate real-world problems, invent solutions, build companies and impact the world beyond the campus.
