Various officials including Gov. Glenn Youngkin, Mayor Levar Stoney, interim police chief Rick Edwards came together at Jackson Ward’s Abner Clay Park Monday, Jan. 30 to honor the life of 29-year-old Tyre Nichols of Memphis, Tenn., a FedEx worker who was murdered by at least five Memphis City Police officers earlier in the month during an alleged traffic stop.

At the invitation of Charles Willis, executive director of United Communities Against Crime, various officials including Gov. Glenn Youngkin, Mayor Levar M. Stoney, interim Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards, Henrico Police Chief Eric D. English, Delegate Delores L. McQuinn, Richmond NAACP President J.J. Minor and various members of local police units came together at Jackson Ward’s Abner Clay Park on Jan. 30 to honor the life of 29-year-old Tyre Nichols of Memphis, Tenn. “Each year on Oct. 10, the Sacred Ground Project hosts a community gathering at the African Burial Ground to mark the date in 1800 when the great slave rebellion leader Gabriel was executed at the town gallows,” said Ana Edwards, founder and chair of the project. “We gather to honor Gabriel and all those who gave their lives in the cause of freedom, to celebrate more than 20 years of learning the history of this sacred ground and to rededicate ourselves to reclaiming and properly memorializing Shockoe Bottom once the epicenter of the U.S. domestic slave trade. On “National Coffee with a Cop Day,” Richmond Police Chief Gerald M. Smith stopped by Starbucks Coffee at 2309 W. Broad St. and chatted with community members including 10-year-old Bella Brownlee, a 6th-grader at Albert Hill Middle School. Along with her mom, Lynne Brownlee, both of North Side, Bella made a cake for the chief, which they gave to him together. Bella, an accomplished singer also belted out a few stanzas of The Wiz’s “Ease on Down The Road” for the chief and others in the Starbucks. Bella is out of school today because Richmond Public Schools is closed for Yom Kippur. Her mother captures the moment here on her cell phone.
