Residential units represent a big change for the Baker property that had been a school site since 1871. According to the city school system, this building opened in 1940 as a replacement for the worn-out original. Closed as an elementary school in 1979, the building was renamed for a former principal, Katherine L. Johnson, and was used as an alternative school for troubled middle and high school students until 2013 when RPS vacated the building.

Current and former residents of Westwood celebrate last Sunday a new state historical marker honoring the community in Richmond’s West End that was started by formerly enslaved people following the Civil War. Location of marker: Willow Lawn Drive and Dunbar Street. Residents built homes, a church, a school and businesses, as well as social and cultural organizations in the community that originally was a part of Henrico County. It was annexed to Richmond in 1942 and residents later successfully fought attempts by city officials to demolish the community and replace it with a public park. Westwood Baptist Church remains the most prominent landmark. Kathleen Hopkins Valentine, 93, seated at right, is the oldest resident living in Westwood. She said she and her family moved when she was 4 from Philadelphia to what was then called Westwood Village. Others pictured here are, from left, Kelly Johnson Crowder, whose mother, Jane Cooper Johnson, integrated Westhampton Junior High and Thomas Jefferson High School in the early 1960s; Charlene Hopkins, kneeling, and Frances Bush Jones, both cousins of tennis great Arthur Ashe Jr., whose grandparents lived in Westwood; Warrick Taylor, a former Westwood resident; Norfolk State University professor Dr. Colita Nichols Fairfax, immediate past chair of the Virginia Board of Historic Resources, kneeling, and her mother, Brenda Dabney Nichols, who was born and raised in Westwood; and Lennie Anderson Thornton, a former Westwood resident. David Carter, 49, an employee of the Richmond Department of Public Works, receives the single-dose Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine May 5 during a walk-up vaccination clinic held at George Wythe High School by the Richmond and Henrico health districts. No appointments are needed for the health districts’ clinics. The school at 4314 Crutchfield St. in South Richmond will be among several sites offering inoculations during the coming days. The next vaccine clinics at George Wythe will be noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 18, and 3 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 19. The Johnson & Johnson vaccine will be available, along with the two- dose Pfizer vaccine.

Catherine Hinton, 65, of Richmond receives the new, single-dose Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine during a mass vaccination event Monday at Richmond Raceway sponsored by the Richmond and Henrico health districts. It was the first time the newly approved Johnson & Johnson vaccine was administered locally in vaccine clinics. The Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines require two doses for full vaccination.

Thanksgiving 2020 was a different sort of holiday, with community events geared toward carry-out meals rather than a communal, sit-down dinner because of the pandemic. Above, at Diversity Richmond in North Side, volunteer Perone Johnson, left, hands a packaged hot Thanksgiving dinner to Luise “Cheezi” Farmer, Diversity Richmond’s board chair, who in turn will hand it to motorists in drive-thru set up in the parking lot. BlackPrideRVA partnered with Diversity Richmond and Ms. Girlee’s Kitchen to provide 200 hot meals on Thanksgiving to all who wanted them. Last year’s inaugural event was a family-style dinner for 150 people.

Isaiah “Prince Trombone” Robinson serenades passing motorists as fellow musician, Robert Johnson III, accompanies him on an electric drum outside The National in the 700 block of East Broad Street. The venue currently is closed because of the coronavirus. The two 23- year-old musicians began their impromptu concerts after they were laid off from their full-time gigs. Their goal: To deliver some upbeat sounds to counter the pandemic’s gloom and to possibly earn some spare change from the few pedestrians in Downtown. Other in Richmond musicians have been sharing their talents on their porches or in parks. One example is saxophonist James “Plunky” Branch, who regularly turns his porch into a solo concert platform for those within earshot in his West End neighborhood.
