The site of the former Oak Grove Elementary School has been vacant since January 2013 when Oak Grove-Bellemeade Elementary opened its doors. The Redeemer Assembly of Jesus Christ originally lost its bid of $275,000 to purchase the site after a City Council vote in August 2022. In September 2022, City Council approved Lynx Ventures’s request to purchase the site for $500,000.

This community box in the 1600 block of Laburnum Avenue on North Side invites book readers to do just that. Roughly a dozen mini libraries are scattered around Richmond. According to the regional Girl Scouts organization, the cookie program teaches youth members key life skills as they raise money to support the operation and programming that serves 12,000 children and teens in 36 cities and counties. “When you buy cookies, you are helping to power beneficial experiences for girls and build the next generation of female entrepreneurs,” stated Molly T. All was calm at Abner Clay Park in Jackson Ward on Monday, Jan. 15 as snow flurries fell and stuck in several parts of Richmond and surrounding counties. Temperatures stayed in the low 30s, crept to the 40s by Tuesday, but fell back to the 30s by Wednesday. Want more snow? Hang around until Friday and you may get your wish. That’s when it’s predicted that the white speckles will make an encore.

Sydney Lester of the Virginia Flaggers carries the Confederate battle flag during his group’s protest last Saturday in front of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts on the Boulevard. The museum has removed the symbol of hate from the Confederate Chapel located behind the museum. Another piece of Richmond history is biting the dust. The long-vacant headquarters building for Fulton Gas Works is in the final phase of demolition. Most of the building, which appears to date from 1900, has been demolished from the site at 3301 Williamsburg Ave. Bare ground remains. The Gas Works began operations in 1856 to provide coal-converted natural gas to fuel streetlights and, later, to heat homes. The plant continued to operate until 1950, when the city shut down the operation and began importing the fuel.

Work is underway on a new central forensics laboratory on Studley Road in Hanover County. The $189 million project is scheduled for completion in 2025. The project includes construction of a four-story, state-of-the-art forensic facility, of about 89,000 square meters, according to a news release from the builder, Skanska USA. When finished, the facility will house the Virginia Department of Forensic Science and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, alongside space for analysis laboratories, autopsies, evidence storage, training, state administrative needs, among other functions.

Thick smoke filled the air when an underground transformer exploded about 11:20 a.m. last Friday near 6th and Main streets in Downtown. Multiple explosions followed, sending flames through some manhole covers as high as 20 feet in the air. Dominion Virginia Power switched off electricity in the area to prevent further explosions. About 400 people were evacuated from nearby buildings, with a few people treated at the hospital for smoke inhalation. The temporary power outages caused some businesses to close for the day.

This long vacant tobacco plant at 2220 Stockton St. is being transformed into a new home for CARITAS, a nonprofit that serves people who are homeless or struggling with substance abuse. The $27 million renovation will provide a new home base for the organization led by Karen Stanley, in addition to one of the area’s largest recovery centers for female addicts. When complete and opened next spring, the building will have 160 beds for women in recovery, plus 47 apartments for women moving into the next stage of their lives. Who are the Capitol Police protecting? // The noise was deafening last Saturday when an immigrant rights group held a rally in Capitol Square at the same time Republican gubernatorial candidate Corey Stewart held an “End Sanctuary Cities” rally espousing an opposite viewpoint. At least two of the Stewart supporters, one at right, openly carried military-style weapons and guns and stood just yards away from the ICE Out of RVA protesters. This sleek, 20-story glass tower rises 413 feet into the sky in the block bounded by Cary, Canal, 6th and 7th streets in Downtown. On a clear or cloudy day, several Richmond schools are generating energy to help power their facility. Here, solar panels on the roof of Lucille M. Brown Middle School on Jahnke Road in South Side are the latest effort by Richmond Public Schools to “Go Green” and cut energy costs. Richmond Public Schools Superintendent Jason Kamras, Gov. Ralph S. Northam and other officials held a news conference last Friday at the school to announce that the last of 10 city schools now have solar panels. The panels will produce enough electricity to cover about 24 percent of the schools’ electrical needs. The $2.9 million project, which also includes an energy monitoring system, was completed during the summer and was paid for by a grant from RVA Solar Fund, part of the Community Foundation for a Greater Richmond, and were developed by Secure Futures Solar, a clean energy company. The panels will save RPS approximately $2 million in utility costs over the next 20 years, or about $100,000 annually, officials said. Officials said it is the largest solar energy system at a K-12 school division in Virginia to date. The other city schools with solar panels are Huguenot High School, Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School and Oak Grove, Miles J. Jones, Linwood Holton, Blackwell, Fisher, Broad Rock and G.H. Reid elementary schools.

A towering crane’s reflection almost looks like a staircase rising up the side of this 20-story Downtown building under construction for Dominion Energy in the block bounded by 6th, 7th, Canal and Cary streets. Crews and cranes have been at the site since work began last year. The building will be known as 600 Canal Place when it opens next year. Dominion Energy has presented plans to a construct a second building to replace its 21-story Virginia headquarters, One James River Plaza, located next door at 701 E. Cary St.

The building boom in Richmond continues, with the Manchester area in South Side being one of the hottest areas for apartment construction. These photos show the construction of the Riverview Apartments by Alabama-based LIV Development on 7 acres at Semmes and Cowardin avenues just east of the Lee Bridge. When complete next year, the $50 million development is to offer 269 units in seven buildings. Begun in 2019, the development is just the latest in the area. Across the street on the site of a former car dealership, development is underway on another 180 units. A host of other apartments are in planning or under construction to the east, such as River’s Edge II, The Current and South Falls.
