University of Virginia Cavaliers players celebrate their first NCAA Tournament championship win Monday night with Coach Tony Bennett, third from right, on the podium at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. As champion of the Atlantic 10 tournament last weekend at the Henrico Sports & Events Center, UR will be competing in the NCAA “Big Dance” next week. Grace Townsend, right, a senior point guard from James River High in Midlothian, had 13 points, six rebounds and five assists as UR scored a 65-51 win over Rhode Island.

The 40-foot pedestal where the enormous bronze statue of Confederate Robert E. Lee on horseback once stood on Monument Avenue was finally cleared away Wednesday afternoon by crews working for 14 days. The Lee statue was removed in September. The site is to be cleaned and the ground leveled. The state is expected to turn ownership of the land over to the City of Richmond after Christmas.

Reconciliation rally // Richmond Mayor Levar M. Stoney addresses a crowd of hundreds Sunday during a solidarity rally at Richmond’s Slavery Reconciliation Statue at 15th and Main streets in Shockoe Bottom. Participants at the hour long vigil remembered the victims of the weekend’s violent clashes in Charlottesville over that city’s planned removal of Confederate statues. In 2018 in Virginia, 278 people were killed in alcohol-related crashes and more than 4,400 people were injured, according to MADD. Fatalities were up 12 percent over 2017, according to the organization’s data. Victims’ names were read as candles were lighted Monday night. The organization hopes the event will bring healing to families and motivation to curb impaired driving.

Beating the heat Sweltering temperatures that reached nearly 100 degrees this week were enough to convince Donovan Walker to cool off by jumping into the Hotchkiss Pool at 701 E. Brookland Park Blvd. in North Side. Periods of heavy rain brought some brief relief, but it didn’t last long. Weather forecasters predict slightly lower temperatures over the next few days. Workers are busy readying the Stuart C. Siegel Center at Virginia Commonwealth University for the start of basketball season, with a free preview of the men’s team 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, at the annual Black & Gold Game. The arena will be enhanced with four new luxury suites, a new scoreboard over center court, installation of a new sound system and new branding marks for VCU and the Atlantic 10 conference. The center’s seating capacity will remain about 7,700.

A “Black Lives Matter” banner hangs in October on the wall in front of a Monument Avenue residence near Allen Avenue, the epicenter of protests over racial injustice and police brutality since May. Signs like this one and logos with BLM have become commonplace on businesses and other buildings in and near Downtown and the Lee monument following an early spate of damage. The signs often were posted as a signal to spare the place from any damage.
