Crabs & Q Crabs, gumbo and burgers were among the plentiful fare last Saturday at “Coming Out of the Corona Crab & Q,” a free community event in the East End encouraging people to vote, stop the violence, get vaccinated against COVID-19 and advocate for new city schools to be built. Hundreds of people enjoyed the food, music and camaraderie being outdoors and in the sunshine. The event, held outside the Bacon Retirement Community at 815 N. 35th St., was sponsored by James E. “JJ” Minor III, and numerous groups, including the Richmond Branch NAACP, the Help Me Help You Foundation, United Communities Against Crime and health care organizations. Members of the Richmond, Va., chapter of the Continental Societies Inc. wrap and package food items as they are ready for the waiting crowd.

Richmond’s 24-year-old floodwall seeks to guard low-lying areas of the city when the James River is at flood stage. This is a view of the 2,000-foot wall on South Side looking north toward Downtown. But as Richmond has learned, the floodwall can create flooding behind it when heavy rainfall dousing the city is unable to escape into the river, which happened during Tropical Storm Gaston in 2004. Workers are busy readying the Stuart C. Siegel Center at Virginia Commonwealth University for the start of basketball season, with a free preview of the men’s team 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, at the annual Black & Gold Game. The arena will be enhanced with four new luxury suites, a new scoreboard over center court, installation of a new sound system and new branding marks for VCU and the Atlantic 10 conference. The center’s seating capacity will remain about 7,700.

Hundreds of volunteers — and a few goats — responded last Saturday to a call to help spruce up historic, but long neglected, East End and Evergreen cemeteries where an estimated 17,000 African-Americans have been buried since the 1890s. A “Black Lives Matter” banner hangs in October on the wall in front of a Monument Avenue residence near Allen Avenue, the epicenter of protests over racial injustice and police brutality since May. Signs like this one and logos with BLM have become commonplace on businesses and other buildings in and near Downtown and the Lee monument following an early spate of damage. The signs often were posted as a signal to spare the place from any damage.

Additional upgrades are taking place in Byrd Park’s Reservoir, which was built in 1897 and has served residents of Richmond and surrounding counties since then. The reservoir operates as two finished water tanks. Upgrades and maintenance have occurred over the years to ensure peak operating capacity. Richmond’s Department of Public Utilities is making improvements to the distribution system’s reliability and to increase the operational flexibility of facilities associated with the reservoir. This tank rehabilitation project will be completed in two phases.

Men at work // Trainees in Dominion Energy’s lineman program work on power lines at the company’s Safety and Training Center in Chester. The photo opportunity on April 20 was part of the National Lineman Appreciation Day observance to raise public awareness about what it takes to keep the lights on for customers, no matter the weather. The lineman training process is seven steps over five years that combine classroom and field work. At the center, trainees learn to climb, make repairs from bucket trucks and troubleshoot equipment.

Call it a brand new look for the site of the former Armstrong High School in the 1600 block of North 31st Street in the East End, where these nearly complete apartments now line the street. In all, 105 units are under construction in the first phase of what is called Church Hill North, including 60 family units and 45 senior apartments. Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) is a summer-blooming member of the aster family that produces multiple long-lasting blossoms in flat-topped clusters in a variety of colors. A fence remains around the circle on Monument Avenue where the six-story monument to Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee once stood. The statue was removed in September, and the pedestal was cleared away late last month. This week, City Council authorized Mayor Levar M. Stoney to accept the statue, pedestal and the land from the state. They are to be turned over to the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia in Jackson Ward, along with other city-owned Confederate monuments.
