Dr. Harvey greets singer Lionel Richie at Hampton University. While the date of this photo is uncertain, Mr. Richie flew to campus from Los Angeles at his own expense, he said at the time, to emcee Hampton University’s 125th anniversary celebration on April 1, 1993. He told a local newspaper that he and Dr. Harvey had a long-standing friendship dating back to their days at Tuskegee Institute when Mr. Richie was a student and Dr. Harvey was an administrator.

Another piece of Richmond history is biting the dust. The long-vacant headquarters building for Fulton Gas Works is in the final phase of demolition. Most of the building, which appears to date from 1900, has been demolished from the site at 3301 Williamsburg Ave. Bare ground remains. The Gas Works began operations in 1856 to provide coal-converted natural gas to fuel streetlights and, later, to heat homes. The plant continued to operate until 1950, when the city shut down the operation and began importing the fuel.

Work is underway on a new central forensics laboratory on Studley Road in Hanover County. The $189 million project is scheduled for completion in 2025. The project includes construction of a four-story, state-of-the-art forensic facility, of about 89,000 square meters, according to a news release from the builder, Skanska USA. When finished, the facility will house the Virginia Department of Forensic Science and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, alongside space for analysis laboratories, autopsies, evidence storage, training, state administrative needs, among other functions.

Thick smoke filled the air when an underground transformer exploded about 11:20 a.m. last Friday near 6th and Main streets in Downtown. Multiple explosions followed, sending flames through some manhole covers as high as 20 feet in the air. Dominion Virginia Power switched off electricity in the area to prevent further explosions. About 400 people were evacuated from nearby buildings, with a few people treated at the hospital for smoke inhalation. The temporary power outages caused some businesses to close for the day.

Dapper for School // Jayden Morgan wants to look his best when he starts kindergarten at J.E.B. Stuart Elementary School in Richmond. He got his hair cut last Saturday by Jamaal Umar Abdur-Rahman during the 8th Annual Back-to- School Rally at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School in the East End. Students also received backpacks and school supplies at the event hosted by Richmond School Board member Shonda Harris-Muhammed. Games, music, food and other activities pumped up the back-to-school spirit.

Like a fish // Kole Macklin, 11, a member of the Hotchkiss Community Center Swim Team, works on his breaststroke at the center’s pool at 701 E. Brookland Park Blvd. Cloudy weather couldn’t keep the youngster away from the water last Saturday, when the city’s public pools opened for the season. This long vacant tobacco plant at 2220 Stockton St. is being transformed into a new home for CARITAS, a nonprofit that serves people who are homeless or struggling with substance abuse. The $27 million renovation will provide a new home base for the organization led by Karen Stanley, in addition to one of the area’s largest recovery centers for female addicts. When complete and opened next spring, the building will have 160 beds for women in recovery, plus 47 apartments for women moving into the next stage of their lives. Richmond’s oldest fire station has a date with a wrecking ball after 114 years. This is Fire Station No. 12, which opened at 2223 W. Cary St. in 1908 when horses pulled the equipment to fires. Plans for replacing this historic station with a new building at the site began in earnest last year. The city has invested in design and is now reviewing construction bids that were received by the Tuesday deadline. Jayden Holmes, 9, a student at Carver elementary School, is ready to get his COVID-19 vaccine. On Monday, he and his mother, Shankita Holmes, who works in nursing, were outside the Arthur Ashe Jr. Athletic Center on Arthur Ashe boulevard, which has been set up as a community vaccination center by local health officials. The youngster, who was nervous about getting a needle, survived the shot and said he was feeling good when he left. Children ages 5 to 11 are now eligible to receive the vaccine.

Who are the Capitol Police protecting? // The noise was deafening last Saturday when an immigrant rights group held a rally in Capitol Square at the same time Republican gubernatorial candidate Corey Stewart held an “End Sanctuary Cities” rally espousing an opposite viewpoint. At least two of the Stewart supporters, one at right, openly carried military-style weapons and guns and stood just yards away from the ICE Out of RVA protesters. This sleek, 20-story glass tower rises 413 feet into the sky in the block bounded by Cary, Canal, 6th and 7th streets in Downtown. The City of Richmond has two salt domes, including this one located at 802 Forest Lawn Drive on Richmond’s Northside. The other is located on the city’s South Side at 2506 North Hopkins Road.This particular igloo-like structure was erected in 2017 and sits behind Henderson Middle School. Each dome holds 3,000 tons of salt and 1,000 tons of salt typically is used for each snow event. Richmond’s Department of Public Works says that when a storm is on the way, the city tries to pre-treat the roads at least 72 hours before the impending storm.

On a clear or cloudy day, several Richmond schools are generating energy to help power their facility. Here, solar panels on the roof of Lucille M. Brown Middle School on Jahnke Road in South Side are the latest effort by Richmond Public Schools to “Go Green” and cut energy costs. Richmond Public Schools Superintendent Jason Kamras, Gov. Ralph S. Northam and other officials held a news conference last Friday at the school to announce that the last of 10 city schools now have solar panels. The panels will produce enough electricity to cover about 24 percent of the schools’ electrical needs. The $2.9 million project, which also includes an energy monitoring system, was completed during the summer and was paid for by a grant from RVA Solar Fund, part of the Community Foundation for a Greater Richmond, and were developed by Secure Futures Solar, a clean energy company. The panels will save RPS approximately $2 million in utility costs over the next 20 years, or about $100,000 annually, officials said. Officials said it is the largest solar energy system at a K-12 school division in Virginia to date. The other city schools with solar panels are Huguenot High School, Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School and Oak Grove, Miles J. Jones, Linwood Holton, Blackwell, Fisher, Broad Rock and G.H. Reid elementary schools.

A towering crane’s reflection almost looks like a staircase rising up the side of this 20-story Downtown building under construction for Dominion Energy in the block bounded by 6th, 7th, Canal and Cary streets. Crews and cranes have been at the site since work began last year. The building will be known as 600 Canal Place when it opens next year. Dominion Energy has presented plans to a construct a second building to replace its 21-story Virginia headquarters, One James River Plaza, located next door at 701 E. Cary St.

It’s a family affair: When the string didn’t work on Sunday to unveil the honorary North Side street sign for the late Clarence L. Townes Jr., Townes family members and friends lifted Mr. Townes’ great-grandson, 8-year-old Ryland Willis, to remove the sign’s covering. A crowd turned out for the honor to the late Richmond business and civic leader who also was chairman of the Richmond School Board for four years. He died in January 2017.
