Booklovers who want to share their love of reading have placed a Little Free Library in their yard in the 1600 block of Laburnum Avenue in North Side. The national nonprofit Little Free Library program is a free book exchange that encourages people to come and pick a book to read and leave one for others to take for free. The mission is to build a sense of community along with a love of reading by providing free book access to all. The Little Free Library idea was started in 2009 in Wisconsin and has grown across the nation and the globe. Today, there are 90,000 registered mini-libraries in all 50 states and more than 90 countries, including dozens within Metro Richmond. For a map of locations, go to www.littlefreelibrary.org.

Crabs & Q Crabs, gumbo and burgers were among the plentiful fare last Saturday at “Coming Out of the Corona Crab & Q,” a free community event in the East End encouraging people to vote, stop the violence, get vaccinated against COVID-19 and advocate for new city schools to be built. Hundreds of people enjoyed the food, music and camaraderie being outdoors and in the sunshine. The event, held outside the Bacon Retirement Community at 815 N. 35th St., was sponsored by James E. “JJ” Minor III, and numerous groups, including the Richmond Branch NAACP, the Help Me Help You Foundation, United Communities Against Crime and health care organizations.

Crabs & Q-Crabs, gumbo and burgers were among the plentiful fare last Saturday at “Coming Out of the Corona Crab & Q,” a free community event in the East End encouraging people to vote, stop the violence, get vaccinated against COVID-19 and advocate for new city schools to be built. In 2018 in Virginia, 278 people were killed in alcohol-related crashes and more than 4,400 people were injured, according to MADD. Fatalities were up 12 percent over 2017, according to the organization’s data. Victims’ names were read as candles were lighted Monday night. The organization hopes the event will bring healing to families and motivation to curb impaired driving.

Richmond’s 24-year-old floodwall seeks to guard low-lying areas of the city when the James River is at flood stage. This is a view of the 2,000-foot wall on South Side looking north toward Downtown. But as Richmond has learned, the floodwall can create flooding behind it when heavy rainfall dousing the city is unable to escape into the river, which happened during Tropical Storm Gaston in 2004. A “Black Lives Matter” banner hangs in October on the wall in front of a Monument Avenue residence near Allen Avenue, the epicenter of protests over racial injustice and police brutality since May. Signs like this one and logos with BLM have become commonplace on businesses and other buildings in and near Downtown and the Lee monument following an early spate of damage. A fence remains around the circle on Monument Avenue where the six-story monument to Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee once stood. The statue was removed in September, and the pedestal was cleared away late last month. This week, City Council authorized Mayor Levar M. Stoney to accept the statue, pedestal and the land from the state. They are to be turned over to the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia in Jackson Ward, along with other city-owned Confederate monuments.

The flags of 83 countries — from Algeria to Venezuela — are on display in Shockoe Bottom in honor of the international cyclists coming to race on the streets of Richmond and nearby localities later this month. Location: Near 15th and East Main streets in the parking lot across from Main Street Station. The flags represent the many nations likely to send riders. The flags are lashed to concrete pillars that support the Interstate 95 overpass. They will serve as a backdrop for race-related events at the train station, the city said. The start-finish line for many of the cycling contests will be on Broad Street at the Greater Richmond Convention Center, which also will provide a major gathering area for fans. The city said world flags also will be on display on Broad Street during the opening ceremony Sept. 18. The UCI Road World Championships are set to run Sept. 19 through 27. Richmond is the first U.S. city to host the races in 29 years.

Speakers at the event, organized by Coming to the Table, recited excerpts from Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech that was delivered at the 1963 march. The walk also marked the 65th anniversary of the lynching of Emmett Till, a 14-year-old from Chicago who was brutally murdered in Money, Miss., in 1955 for allegedly whistling at a white woman. His lynching, and a photo of his disfigured body lying in a casket that was published by JET magazine, drew widespread public attention to the brutality Black people faced, particularly in the South, and helped mobilize the Civil Rights Movement.

City Hall is bathed in the blue and yellow of the Ukrainian flag, a nightly display of solidarity with the beleaguered Eastern European nation that is struggling to repel the destructive invasion of the Russian army. The invasion began Feb. 24, the day after Defender of the Fatherland Day in Russia. Russian President Vladimir Putin wants Ukraine to again be a vassal state of Moscow, as it was when the Soviet Union was in existence. The inva- sion is the largest since World War II. Still, the bi-color flag continues to fly as Ukraine resists. The flag has been the symbol of Ukraine since the 12th century when it was part of the Kingdom of Galicia- Volhynia. Banned during Soviet rule after World War I, the flag was restored after Ukraine regained its independence in 1991 with the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Mandala: Sacred art/Tibetan Buddhist monks from the Drepung Loseling Monastery in India create a sand mandala at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts recently to share Tibet’s sacred visual and performing arts with area audiences.
