Work is underway to reopen Broad Street in Downtown now that the bike races are over. On Tuesday, a crew was still busy dismantling the stands and barriers for spectators that were in place during the UCI Road World Championships that ended Sunday. Officials anticipate traffic will be moving again on Broad between 3rd and 7th streets this week. This portion of the street has been closed since Sept. 11.

Well-heeled, ready for school- Hundreds of youngsters and their families benefited from New Shoes for Back To School, a ministry started by Third Street Bethel AME Church. The project is now shared by 13 area churches to get youngsters ready for the school year with a new pair of shoes. Lines already had formed when the doors opened 8 a.m. on Labor Day.

The flags of 83 countries — from Algeria to Venezuela — are on display in Shockoe Bottom in honor of the international cyclists coming to race on the streets of Richmond and nearby localities later this month. Location: Near 15th and East Main streets in the parking lot across from Main Street Station. The flags represent the many nations likely to send riders. The flags are lashed to concrete pillars that support the Interstate 95 overpass. They will serve as a backdrop for race-related events at the train station, the city said. The start-finish line for many of the cycling contests will be on Broad Street at the Greater Richmond Convention Center, which also will provide a major gathering area for fans. The city said world flags also will be on display on Broad Street during the opening ceremony Sept. 18. The UCI Road World Championships are set to run Sept. 19 through 27. Richmond is the first U.S. city to host the races in 29 years.

CITYSCAPE-As these photos show, iconic cement silos, left, in the East End have come down. The once proud symbols of Lehigh Cement Co. were demolished in the past two weeks as part of $10 million in improvements the city is undertaking along the north bank of the James River. Winchester-based Howard Shockey & Sons Inc., which did not have any minority partners, cleared the silos, whose site is to be a park. Other projects: The $4 million city portion of the Virginia Capital Trail to which the city contributed $820,000 and the Low-Line Project, a $1.4 million landscaping venture alongside the trail to which the city contributed $200,000 and private sources are donating $1.2 million.

Celebrating ‘the Black Cyclone’- this new mural in Jackson Ward pays homage to forgotten American cycling superstar — Marshall Walter “Major” taylor. Richmond artist sir James thornhill created the colorful mural featuring the two-wheel racing phenom. Location: 1st and Marshall streets. Dubbed “the Black Cyclone,” Mr. taylor broke the color barrier in the sport in the 1890s when bike racing was a big deal in this country and Europe. Despite bigoted competitors attempts to injure him, he ranked as the fastest cyclist in the world into the early 1900s. the cycling Hall of Famer set seven world records and won 117 of his 168 races, while placing second in the rest. He reportedly earned $30,000 a year in his prime, an immense sum for the period.

BUCKS FOR BOOKS - Tyshawna Hankerson, right, is all smiles as she and Tracey Oliver, vice president for administration at the Richmond Free Press, hold a ceremonial replica of the $1,000 book scholarship award to help Ms. Hankerson purchase books this fall when she enters Virginia Commonwealth University. The Free Press joined other area businesses and organizations to provide book scholarship awards through the KLM Scholarship Foundation Inc. More than $30,000 was awarded to 30 students from Virginia at last Saturday’s awards ceremony at Linwood Holton Elementary School on North Side. Speakers included Kimberley L. Martin, who founded the Richmond-based nonprofit. It has awarded nearly $150,000 in book scholarships since its founding in 2002.

PEACEMAKER The debate over the Iran deal brings to mind President Jimmy Carter, center, and the crucial role he played 36 years ago in brokering a lasting peace treaty between two implacable enemies, Egypt and Israel. This iconic photo was taken March 26, 1979, on the White House lawn after the treaty was signed by Egyptian President Anwar Sadat, left, and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin. Sadly, we learned Wednesday that Mr. Carter, 90, has liver cancer that has spread to other parts of his body. We pray for peace and comfort for this world peacemaker and his family.

Thick smoke filled the air when an underground transformer exploded about 11:20 a.m. last Friday near 6th and Main streets in Downtown. Multiple explosions followed, sending flames through some manhole covers as high as 20 feet in the air. Dominion Virginia Power switched off electricity in the area to prevent further explosions. About 400 people were evacuated from nearby buildings, with a few people treated at the hospital for smoke inhalation. The temporary power outages caused some businesses to close for the day.
