Improvements to Abner Clay Park continue to take shape. New trees have been planted and old concrete has been replaced in the park at Leigh Street and Brook Road in Jackson Ward. Richmond is investing $1.27 million in renovating the park. Centennial Contractor Enterprises began the work in October, with completion expected within 60 to 90 days, including installation of a multipurpose field for football and other sports. An anonymous donation of $200,000 enabled installation of a new children’s playground, according to a city official. The only question is whether the pandemic will have cleared up so children and families can start using the park when the work is finished.

A sign posted in Richmond’s Byrd Park offers motorists a friendly reminder: “Love It? Then Lock It! Or Lose It!” Despite the reminder for drivers to lock their cars to keep themselves and their belongings safe, more than 1,390 thefts from motor vehicles have been reported to Richmond Police so far this year. And 561 cars have been reported stolen in the city through Aug. 11. Both figures are down from the same period last year, when 741 cars were reported stolen and there were 1,526 reports of theft from vehicles. The campaign is neither new nor unique to Richmond. Police departments across the nation use the same slogan to remind residents.

Celebrating ‘the Black Cyclone’- this new mural in Jackson Ward pays homage to forgotten American cycling superstar — Marshall Walter “Major” taylor. Richmond artist sir James thornhill created the colorful mural featuring the two-wheel racing phenom. Location: 1st and Marshall streets. Dubbed “the Black Cyclone,” Mr. taylor broke the color barrier in the sport in the 1890s when bike racing was a big deal in this country and Europe. Despite bigoted competitors attempts to injure him, he ranked as the fastest cyclist in the world into the early 1900s. the cycling Hall of Famer set seven world records and won 117 of his 168 races, while placing second in the rest. He reportedly earned $30,000 a year in his prime, an immense sum for the period.

Celebrating Juneteenth/ Hundreds of people enjoy activities last Saturday at “Juneteenth: A Freedom Celebration” on the waterfront of the James River in South Side at the Manchester Dock. The three-day event, organized by the Elegba Folklore Society and its founder, Janine Y. Bell, marks the date on June 19, 1865, when enslaved people in Texas learned of their freedom after the defeat of the Confederates and Union forces took control of that state. Richmond’s celebration included educational sessions for people of all ages to learn about Africans brought to this nation 400 years ago and their struggles and contributions. Tamra Collins and her 6-year-old son, Isaiah, happily sled down a hill at Shrader Road and Eunice Drive last Sunday in Henrico County. When 3 inches of snow hit the metro area last weekend, people took to the outdoors to enjoy the wintry landscape. People were sledding, had snowball fights and built snowmen. While this was Metro Richmond’s first big snowfall of the winter season, the area escaped the 1 to 3 feet of snow the same storm dropped on the Northeast. Much of the snow has melted already, with more wet weather on the way. Rain is expected Friday, Feb. 5, with the possibility of rain and/or snow showers on Sunday, Feb. 7. Nightly temperatures are forecast to remain at or below freezing through next week.

Hundreds of people enjoy activities last Saturday at “Juneteenth: A Freedom Celebration” on the waterfront of the James River in South Side at the Manchester Dock. A key element of Richmond’s drinking water supply system is undergoing about $54 million in major improvements. These photos document the construction underway at the historic Byrd Park Reservoir that first went into service 145 years ago to supply water to the city and surrounding counties. The purpose of the work: To keep the 55 million-gallon storage facility functional. The city Department of Public Utilities is projecting to spend $60 million to cover all costs, about $7 million more than anticipated when the project was first envisioned four years ago. So far, about $4.7 million has been spent on inspections, planning and design, DPU has reported. Opened in 1876, the reservoir is located on the east side of Blanton Avenue and is bounded by Grant Street and Police Memorial Way.

This fallen monster of a tree in Byrd Park exemplifies the damage that has resulted from repeated heavy rains in recent weeks. Location: Boat Lake and Westover Drive. The photo was taken Aug. 19, but it is unknown when the tree fell. Richmond was spared substantial impact from the remnants of Hurricane Fred, which largely bypassed Central Virginia as it moved North. So far during August, the Richmond area has recorded 8.22 inches of rain – or the equivalent of 80 inches of snow. The total rainfall is about 5 inches more than the 10-year rainfall norm for August. The rain spigot was turned off in much of Metro Richmond this week as hot, humid days returned. The forecast indicates that isolated thunderstorms may roll through again on Saturday and Sunday.

The foundation is being laid for the $6.3 million Eggleston Plaza at 2nd and Leigh streets in Jackson Ward, as captured Tuesday by a fisheye lens. When complete, the development is to include 31 apartments and a first-floor restaurant on the former site of the historic Eggleston Hotel. During the era of segregation, the hotel served renowned civil rights leaders, famous entertainers and other African-Americans who were barred from other Richmond hotels because of the color of their skin. The building collapsed and the site was cleared in 2009. The Eggleston family teamed up with developer Kelvin Hanson on the new project, according to city documents. MGT Construction is doing the work. The project is across 2nd Street from the Hippodrome Theater and Taylor Mansion entertainment, restaurant and residential complex. The planned development also includes 10 housing units going up nearby at 1st and Jackson streets.

Daddy's Home// Former Richmond Justice Center inmate Aziz Scott gained celebrity status this week when he was featured on two national television shows. He is pictured above with his 8-year-old daughter, De’Andra, at the 8th Annual Date with Dad Dinner and Dance at the city jail in March. He and his daughter were shown at the dance, organized by Richmond-based CAMP DIVA, on CNN’s “This Is Life With Lisa Ling” Wednesday and on the “Steve Harvey” talk show Tuesday. The shows described Mr. Scott’s participation in the jail’s REAL program, which stands for Recovering from Everyday Addictive Lifestyles. Mr. Scott, 53, credits his participation in the program for helping him turn his life around. He was released from jail in August after serving 17 months for selling drugs. Assisting in efforts to help Mr. Scott succeed, Mr. Harvey presented him with a $5,000 check to relocate his family to a safer neighborhood.

Armstrong Renaissance is heading to the finish line after more than three years of construc- tion at this East End site near the city’s border with Henrico County. Crews now are focusing on development of the final phase – 36 attached and detached homes to be sold at market rates – that will cap the redevelopment on the former site of Armstrong High School. Oversized compared with most of the homes on nearby streets, the new houses were initially priced between $225,000 and $350,000 and are designed to add a residential cachet to the area. When finished, the total 22-acre development will contain 256 modern apartments and houses. The first residents moved in just before Thanksgiving in 2019. Previously called Church Hill North, Armstrong Renaissance is the creation of a partnership of the Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority and the Boston-based nonprofit affordable housing developer, The Community Builders. The project is designed as the first step in the future redevelopment of the 30-acre Creighton Court public housing community located across Nine Mile Road. The new units were used, in part, to relocate Creighton Court residents, clearing the way for a large chunk of the public housing community to be bulldozed and replaced with new units. Demolition of a major portion of Creighton Court is expected this year. Mayor Levar M. Stoney and Richmond City Council cleared the way by allocating $6.8 million in federal American Rescue Plan Act funds to pay for new streets, alleys and underground utilities in the Creighton Court redevelopment.
