Work is underway on a new central forensics laboratory on Studley Road in Hanover County. The $189 million project is scheduled for completion in 2025. The project includes construction of a four-story, state-of-the-art forensic facility, of about 89,000 square meters, according to a news release from the builder, Skanska USA. When finished, the facility will house the Virginia Department of Forensic Science and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, alongside space for analysis laboratories, autopsies, evidence storage, training, state administrative needs, among other functions.

In this file photo, Richmond Police release tear gas on demonstrators at the Lee Monument on Monument Avenue on June 1, 2020, during the third day of local protests against police brutality and racial injustice following the murder of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis Police on May 28, 2020. The crowd that included families with children was tear-gassed about 20 minutes ahead of that day’s 8 p.m. curfew. Then-Police Chief William Smith, who apologized along with Mayor Levar M. Stoney the next day, later resigned and promised to discipline the officers. Six people later filed a lawsuit, which was settled by the City of Richmond in February. The terms were not disclosed.

Devon Henry, president and chief executive officer of the Newport News-based Team Henry Enterprises, hugs his mother, Freda Thornton, after the Lee statue came down on Wednesday. Mr. Henry’s company was responsible for the removal and disassembly of the statue for storage in an undisclosed secure location. He faced death threats after his company’s role in removing Richmond’s other Confederate statues in July 2020 was made public.

Police Chief Gerald Smith consoles the mother of one of the victims injured in gun violence April 27 at the Belt Atlantic Apartments in South Side. Sharnez Hill, 30, and her 3-month-old daughter were killed in the shooting and three others, ages 29, 15 and 11, were wounded. Chief Smith marched with scores of people attending a rally sponsored by Men in Action on May 1 calling for an end to the violence. The group marched from George Wythe High School to the apartment complex, where Chief Smith tried to comfort the mother.

Scores of people turned out Aug. 6 for the official unveiling of the mural honoring the first Black firefighters hired by the City of Richmond. The 10 trailblazers were hired July 1, 1950, and were stationed at Engine Company No. 9 at 5th and Duval streets in Jackson Ward. The commemorative mural was done by local artists Sir James Thornhill, Jason Ford and Kevin Orlosky, and is situated on the side of the Mocha Temple No. 7 Shrine building at 613 N. 2nd St. in Jackson Ward. Members of Mocha Temple pose for a group photo with, at center, Mayor Levar M. Stoney; Mr. Thornhill; and Fire Chief Melvin D. Carter. The unveiling was the kickoff of a weekend of activities sponsored by Engine Company #9 and Associates remembering and honoring the original firefighters.

Group members hold up three fingers in tribute to 3-month-old Neziah Hill, who was shot and killed with her 30-year-old mother, Sharnez Hill, on April 27 in the courtyard of the Belt Atlantic Apartments on Midlothian Turnpike. Three others were wounded. The rally was held in view of the apartment complex. Among the officials attending the rally were U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine, state Sen. According to the regional Girl Scouts organization, the cookie program teaches youth members key life skills as they raise money to support the operation and programming that serves 12,000 children and teens in 36 cities and counties. “When you buy cookies, you are helping to power beneficial experiences for girls and build the next generation of female entrepreneurs,” stated Molly T. City Council elects new leaders: Richmond City Councilwoman Cynthia I. Newbille, 7th District, makes a point Monday after being elected president of Richmond’s governing body. Previously vice president, Dr. Newbille swapped positions with Councilman Chris A. Hilbert, 3rd District, who had been president. He nominated Dr. Newbille and then was elected vice president. Judge Jamison retiring // Family and friends join in unveiling the portrait of outgoing Judge Birdie Hairston Jamison, right, that will hang in the Richmond General District Court. Judge Jamison, 57, is the dean of the state’s traffic court judges. She began hearing cases in Richmond in 1991. Her tenure on the court officially ends Tuesday, Nov. 30. She must step down because the General Assembly declined to reappoint her to a new term last January. Numerous speakers at the retirement ceremony lauded her service to the court.
