Kiwana Yates, the ousted principal of Carver Elementary School, sheds a tear during a March 2015 school assembly for winning a R.E.B. Award for Distinguished Educational Leadership. The award, given in partnership with The Community Foundation, came with a $15,000 prize. Half was for her personal use. Ayla Hyndman, 6 months, is giving Soul Santa a close examination as if to determine if she can tell him all of her Christmas wishes. This is the first Christmas for Ayla, who visited Soul Santa, aka Floyd Brown, recently with her parents at the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia. Soul Santa has become an annual tradition at the museum in Jackson Ward.

About 40 people attended Palm Sunday services in person at Westwood Baptist Church earlier this week. Many others joined via the internet. It was just the second week the historic 147-year-old church has held in-person services since December 2021. The huge statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee is carefully lowered to the ground by workers, where it was cut in half for transport by truck to state storage. Gov. Ralph S.
