A passer-by gives a high-five to the likeness of Barbara Rose Johns at the Virginia Civil Rights Memorial at Capitol Square in Downtown. Unveiled in 2008, the memorial celebrates Ms. Johns and others whose protests and lawsuits brought an end to the Jim Crow-mandated separation of black and white students in public schools. In 1951 at age 16, Ms. Johns led a student walkout from a decaying high school in Prince Edward County. The legal case that grew from that protest helped generate the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark Brown v. Board of Education decision on May 17, 1954 — 61 years ago last Sunday. That remarkable decision outlawed public school segregation and became a major step toward ending legal apartheid in this country. Other figures on the memorial include, front, the late NAACP attorneys Oliver W. Hill and Spottswood W. Robinson III, both of Richmond, who represented Ms. Johns and others in Prince Edward County and whose legal attack on segregation became part of the Brown case. Right, figures celebrate courageous Virginians who marched, protested and helped bring down segregation, serving as a reminder of the role of ordinary citizens in shaping public policy.

CHIEF JAILBIRD- “Help me make bail — I’m an MDA jailbird.” That was the good-natured Facebook post from Richmond Police Chief Alfred Durham, who was locked up at a Downtown restaurant last Thursday. His crime: “Having a Big Heart.” The chief and 75 other Richmond community leaders went behind bars at various locations, with their “bail” money pledged by people in the community raising more than $65,000 to help send 55 children to the Muscular Dystrophy Association Summer Camp in Wakefield, according to MDA officials. The donations also will support MDA’s clinical services at Virginia Commonwealth University and the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU. The chief had raised more than $2,400 in donations by Tuesday.

Police Chief Gerald Smith consoles the mother of one of the victims injured in gun violence April 27 at the Belt Atlantic Apartments in South Side. Sharnez Hill, 30, and her 3-month-old daughter were killed in the shooting and three others, ages 29, 15 and 11, were wounded. Chief Smith marched with scores of people attending a rally sponsored by Men in Action on May 1 calling for an end to the violence. The group marched from George Wythe High School to the apartment complex, where Chief Smith tried to comfort the mother.

ROLLING WITH THE CHIEF - Richmond Police Chief Alfred Durham, center, offers a double wave Saturday morning before he and about 100 young bike riders took off from Gilpin Court in Jackson Ward for a 5K ride around Richmond. Right, Officer Paul Lewis helps Jessica White choose the right bike for the ride. The city sponsored the event, in which 100 new bicycles and helmets were given to youths ages 8 to 18. The ride was the latest of Chief Durham’s efforts to strengthen law enforcement ties with the community. It was followed by Family Day at the Calhoun Family Investment Center.

Cruz Sherman, founder of Men in Action, leads a prayer during a rally Saturday of community members and public officials seeking solutions to stop the city’s gun violence. Group members hold up three fingers in tribute to 3-month-old Neziah Hill, who was shot and killed with her 30-year-old mother, Sharnez Hill, on April 27 in the courtyard of the Belt Atlantic Apartments on Midlothian Turnpike. Three others were wounded. The rally was held in view of the apartment complex. Among the officials attending the rally were U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine, state Sen.
