Another piece of Richmond history is biting the dust. The long-vacant headquarters building for Fulton Gas Works is in the final phase of demolition. Most of the building, which appears to date from 1900, has been demolished from the site at 3301 Williamsburg Ave. Bare ground remains. The Gas Works began operations in 1856 to provide coal-converted natural gas to fuel streetlights and, later, to heat homes. The plant continued to operate until 1950, when the city shut down the operation and began importing the fuel.

Family and friends of DaShawn “Da Da” Cox release balloons in memory of the 17-year-old Armstrong High School student who was shot and killed about 4:40 p.m. Feb. 17 outside the Ashley Oaks Apartments in the 1400 block of Jennie Scher Road in the East End. The teen’s mother and sister, as well as city officials, spoke at the vigil held last Sunday outside the apartment complex. “This is pain that I hope nobody out here will ever have to go through,” his mother, Berthenia Brown, told the crowd through tears. “It hurts.” Richmond Schools Superintendent Jason Kamras said he has been to so many vigils for slain young people that he has lost count. “I’m a little ashamed to say that, but it’s the truth.” He and others called for an end to gun violence in the city. “Enough is enough,” said 7th District School Board member Cheryl L. Burke, a retired principal. “You all tell us what to do.” A community meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, at the Powhatan Community Center, 5051 Northampton St., to discuss possible solutions. Police are asking anyone with information about DeShawn’s death to call Richmond Police Major Crimes Detective A. Darnell at (804) 646-3927 or to contact Crime Stoppers at (804) 780-1000.

Armstrong Renaissance is heading to the finish line after more than three years of construc- tion at this East End site near the city’s border with Henrico County. Crews now are focusing on development of the final phase – 36 attached and detached homes to be sold at market rates – that will cap the redevelopment on the former site of Armstrong High School. Oversized compared with most of the homes on nearby streets, the new houses were initially priced between $225,000 and $350,000 and are designed to add a residential cachet to the area. When finished, the total 22-acre development will contain 256 modern apartments and houses. The first residents moved in just before Thanksgiving in 2019. Previously called Church Hill North, Armstrong Renaissance is the creation of a partnership of the Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority and the Boston-based nonprofit affordable housing developer, The Community Builders. The project is designed as the first step in the future redevelopment of the 30-acre Creighton Court public housing community located across Nine Mile Road. The new units were used, in part, to relocate Creighton Court residents, clearing the way for a large chunk of the public housing community to be bulldozed and replaced with new units. Demolition of a major portion of Creighton Court is expected this year. Mayor Levar M. Stoney and Richmond City Council cleared the way by allocating $6.8 million in federal American Rescue Plan Act funds to pay for new streets, alleys and underground utilities in the Creighton Court redevelopment.

The City of Richmond has two salt domes, including this one located at 802 Forest Lawn Drive on Richmond’s Northside. The other is located on the city’s South Side at 2506 North Hopkins Road.This particular igloo-like structure was erected in 2017 and sits behind Henderson Middle School. Each dome holds 3,000 tons of salt and 1,000 tons of salt typically is used for each snow event. Richmond’s Department of Public Works says that when a storm is on the way, the city tries to pre-treat the roads at least 72 hours before the impending storm.

Crews with heavy equipment have started demolishing the former George Mason Elementary School at 29th and O streets in Church Hill. The school building, which is 99-years-old, was replaced by Henry L. Marsh III Elementary School. Demolition was authorized in mid-2020 when City Council voted 6-3 to clear the old building and its two later additions. The new adjacent school, which formally was opened in September, is named for Mr. Marsh, 88, a retired civil rights lawyer who was Richmond’s first Black mayor and a former state senator. He attended George Mason Elementary School de- cades ago. Supporters of the demolition said removing the building that dates to 1922 would provide needed space for an expanded playground for Marsh Elemen- tary students. Foes of demolition saw the historic building as ripe for conversion to elderly housing that would have allowed young people at the school to interact with elders and create a stream of revenue for the public school system.

A fence remains around the circle on Monument Avenue where the six-story monument to Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee once stood. The statue was removed in September, and the pedestal was cleared away late last month. This week, City Council authorized Mayor Levar M. Stoney to accept the statue, pedestal and the land from the state. They are to be turned over to the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia in Jackson Ward, along with other city-owned Confederate monuments.

Gov. Ralph S. Northam greets 3-year-old Kamara Townes following the Jan. 7 renaming and dedication of a row of state-owned historic homes on Governor Street in Capitol Square. Both the governor and the youngster occupy a place in Virginia history. Gov. Northam is the 73rd governor of the Commonwealth, serving from Jan. 13, 2018, until his term ends this Saturday, Jan. 15. Last week, he dedicated the three newly renovated buildings, formerly known as Morson’s Row, in honor of Dr. William Ferguson “Fergie” Reid, the first Black person elected to the General Assembly following Reconstruction. One of the three buildings now called Reid’s Row was dedicated as the “Townes House,” in recognition of the Townes family that has worked at the Executive Mansion since the 1970s. Kamara is the youngest of that historic lineage. Her father, Martin C. Townes Jr., and his parents and sister are the current Townes family members serving there. Mr. Townes is the deputy butler, while his father, Martin “Tutti” Townes, is the head butler.

A key element of Richmond’s drinking water supply system is undergoing about $54 million in major improvements. These photos document the construction underway at the historic Byrd Park Reservoir that first went into service 145 years ago to supply water to the city and surrounding counties. The purpose of the work: To keep the 55 million-gallon storage facility functional. The city Department of Public Utilities is projecting to spend $60 million to cover all costs, about $7 million more than anticipated when the project was first envisioned four years ago. So far, about $4.7 million has been spent on inspections, planning and design, DPU has reported. Opened in 1876, the reservoir is located on the east side of Blanton Avenue and is bounded by Grant Street and Police Memorial Way.

Her friend was wounded by the gunfire. Eumiyah was a senior at Spartan Academy on West Leigh Street and was expected to graduate in June, her mother said. “That was my baby,” Ms. Mines-Talley said at the vigil held Dec. 27 in Gilpin Court. It was organized by Charles D. Willis, executive director of United Communities Against Crime. Prayers and candles were part of the somber ceremony.
